So, im thinking about selling my 87 Hatch. I drive over 100 miles a day and the car is not proving to be as reliable as i hoped. Silver, New EA81 from CCR, SPFI conversion (cali legal), GM alt. swap, 4 speed d/r, new front cv's from MWE, new tires, new front wheel bearings from subaru dealer, front bumper bar with black KC lights, new energy suspension sway bar bushings. Car runs really well and gets about 30 mpg, passes smog with flying colors. It needs a steering rack and an alignment. But besides that its a really awesome car. I hate to see it go, allot of time and money invested (about $3,000 and have all receipts), but i cant have to break-down on me anymore. Seems like every time i fix something, something else goes wrong. And i no longer have the time since i work farther from home now. Would love to get the money i have put into it back but i know that probably wont happen. The best offer just might take it.

Keep it! It sounds like you've replaced all the major components other than the brakes. It's a nice hatch, don't let it go.

Yea my vote to you would be keep it. That is a very nice hatch. It took me a long time to work the bugs out of my car as well but once you do work them out it WILL be as reliable as you want it to be. Mines a daily drive and aside from hard starts if its very cold outside it runs mint.

You're just frustrated right now. Sit on it for a month before you sell it, if you sell it I bet you regret it.

Ask me how i know

You are all right. I will regret selling it once its gone. But i do have alot of projects at this point and i am also in the process of restoring my 76' Chevy Stepside which is just about done. I will hold onto the hatch for as long as i can though. I do have an attachment to the car. It has gone places some trucks couldnt go. It would be awesome if i could keep it and turn it into the wheeler that i want to. A 4 inch lift with some good sized mudterrains with a lincoln-locked rear, damn id be set for some bad a** trails.

So here are the pics. Im not going to sugar coat anything to try and sell it, it is what it is. And it is an awesome car if u love subies. Like i mentioned before, its a CCR EA81 (decked heads and spfi pistons, 10.5:1 comp.) still under the 35,000 miles warranty. SPFI conversion, msd coil, open element air cleaner, GM alternator swap, 4-speed D/R tranny, New MWE cv's (not reman), new steering rack, new factory wheel bearings and seals, black KC daylighters, New Alpine cd deck, sirius satillite radio, Alpine 6x9's in boxes, 12'' Kicker sub w/300 watt amp, new 4'' speakers in front for highs, Energy Suspension sway bar bushings, new tires. I also reinforced the rear mustache bar so no more bending. It passes california smog and has the smog ref sticker under the hood. Interior is in no way perfect but pretty clean for an 87 i think, rear seat back is a little torn. And of course, there are minor dings dents and scratches throughout the car.

Not quite sure what i would settle for. What would be your possible offer? Im pretty much ready to sell and considering offers.

It sounds like youve worked out all the kinks you should be haveing. . if its fuel related i think you can take the rear driveshaft off and save you some gas bucks. What problems are you currently haveing.

Its not so much fuel related, it get 30mpg when i keep my foot out of it, it also takes 91 octane gas, the CCR motor runs better with it because of the high compression. I cant seem to get rid of the clunking/popping front end at low speeds, i cant figure out what the problem is. Everything is pretty much new up front besides the struts and lower control arm to sway bar bushings. There is nothing wrong with the car, i drive it to work everyday. Beside cosmetics (minor dents, scratches, and faded paint) the car is in awesome condition. It might just be time for me to let it go, and with gas prices expected to hit $5.00 + by the end of the summer, ive been considering a motorcycle.

did you change the strut rod bushings? if so, did you perhaps put them in backward? there is a newer style of strut rod bushings that superceded the old type and they look a lot different.
did you change the ball joints?
strut tops (new rubber)?
swap in control arms with nicer bushings?
steering rack bushings?
check the motor and tranny's crossmembers and mounts?
pitch stopper?

take a break, don't give it up. You'll sell that to someone at a loss, and all they'll need is a couple weekends and like $150 and it'll be solid, and you'll be out a car.

Do u think any of that stuff would cause cv boots to rip? Cause that is also a major problem im having. Already did the ball joints, havent done anything with the struts and it has new steering rack and motor mounts. Its not that i dont want to keep the car, its just that i drive 100+ miles a day and even with 30mpg its not good enough. I dont have the time to fix the car when something goes wrong anymore, i work to much. I have already picked a motorcycle and when the car is gone im gonna get it. If i can sell it! I know if i do it will be at a loss but i wont let it go for nothing.

So, at the point i am at now. I am considering all reasonable offers! I would really like to sell the car and i would rather someone buy it that enjoys older subarus than someone who will just beat it. Although, it is really none of my concern after the car is sold, i would just like to give enthusiests a chance to pick it up before i put it in the autoshopper.

I missed the price.....

Right now, i just really need to get rid of it. I wanted $2500, but im planning on removing the stereo system and the passenger side cv boot has torn. The ride height was to high on the front suspension. Its a new MWE cv and is still good, i only drove about 2 miles home after i noticed it tore and its been sitting since. At this point i will take $1500 if its picked up, well worth it since i have over 3k in it.

the original OBS-I love it. Do you think the axles are too stretched or could bigger/longer boots work. It must have been a fun project. I think the price is worth it just for the engine eh?

btw, is this worth it? what nightmares would await me, immediate costs to keep running: http://denver.craigslist.org/car/673985448.html

Its all about what u wanna end up paying. I got my hatch for next to nothing but invested a whole lot into it. I was well worth it and the funnest slow car ive ever owned. But i also spent about $3500 into it.

It really sucks nobody is stepping up to take this car off my hands. Had to put it on craigslist, and ebay soon enough.

I made you an offer for what I thought it was worth a while back. I hate to be a jerk, but I think that offer is about the highest you are going to get for a good looking hatch back. The money just isn't there yet for a hatch back. They peak out at right around $1500 ( with a few VERY RARE exceptions), and I paid well less than that for a PRISTINE '86 Hatch shortly after I made you that offer. You gotta keep in mind the market you are dealing with. Most Subaru owners are bargain shoppers, and at anything over $1500, I doubt most people are going to see ANY hatch as a great bargain.

Not to break balls, but just wanted to give you an explanation as to why it may not be gone yet.:burnout:

I paid $1500 for a mint hatch. I would do it again. The SPFI swap is a selling point. I have been thinking about getting this, but the 170hp of my Turbo Legacy is hard to give up, even at 16mpg.

SuperNova

I know what your saying. But $1500 is the lowest i will go. I know it really doesnt matter to anyone else but that is less than half of what i put into it not including time. And it might be an older car and a hatch but the 30mpg and new motor still under warranty are worth the money. And with current fuel prices on the rise and more than likely gonna hit over $5.00 per gallon by the end of the summer, a small car that runs really well is a steal at the price i want.

If your seriously interested, and are willing to pick it up, you should pm me and we'll talk. I really need to get rid of it. Its taking up space i dont have.
