Has anyone ever bought a remanufactured engine from Japan Engines? http://www.japanengine.com/products/prodDetails.asp?pID=492&category=34&subcategory=662&size=0&search=&page= I'm in the market for an used Outback, and have found one that has a remanufactured engine from this place above and am wondering if anyone has any experience with these or if the fact that the engine is remanufactured woiuld make you walk away? They do at least use new pistons. I've seen "remanufactured" ones sell for $3 K plus, with a 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty. Would this engine start knocking (piston slap) on startup in 30000 miles ? Emily told me " Our motors don't have that piston slap noise" Sounded like a diesel on start up at 35000 miles. 2. Do your motors have head gasket problems ? Emily told me " Our motors don't have head gasket problems. 120000 miles, blown head gaskets. She told me everything I needed to hear to buy one of their motors. Heres the best of all this. She wouldn't talk to me on the phone after the head gasket blew. North to Alaska Posted March 25, 2011 Share Posted March 25, 2011 YA, me too. Then I bought one of CCR's motors EJ-25D. Bad piston slap at 30K, blown head gasket at 120K CCR (Emily) lied to me. Hey, Before you move on from this car, consider this: You can see and drive the car, no? How much are they asking? If it checks out good by driving and looking at it, it's probably worth fair market value. They replaced the pistons so there may not be any piston slap to deal with. When you put new pistons and rings in one, the measurements of the piston ring to ring land clearance will be within OEM spec. It's the most important measurement in the motor. Say factory spec is .0012 to .003 with a max allowed of say .0059. The .0012 to .003 is considered good as new, and it is. .003 to .0059 is rebuilt territory. At least take it for a drive? idosubaru Posted March 27, 2011 Share Posted March 27, 2011 i wouldn't write it off but i'd be somewhat skeptical. if it doesn't have Subaru head gaskets or you can't confirm that it does, then i'd move on. check for signs of oil consumption to verify the motor is not using oil. you don't mention which year it is - if it's a 99 or earlier, drive it a lot and make sure it's not overheating. if it's a 2000 or later they typically leak externally and can be visually inspected. this is on factory built motors though. I have a (very good) machine shop that rebuilds EJ25D long-blocks all the time (they have one in stock for core exchange at all times) for $1300 out the door.
