lizkeljack
I have a 2000 Subaru Forester AWD Automatic which flashed the AT Oil Temp light at me while I was on the road. Now this morning, I drained off a few quarts of AT fluid because it smelled burnt. Then I added a few quarts. The light has stayed off since yesterday ... but now: 1. Do I check the AT levels while it's running in neutral? OR 2. Do I check it with the engine off? Any help greatly appreciated!
Legacy777
To check AT fluid level, warm up the trans/car to normal operating temp. Park on level surface, cylce the gear shifter slowly from park to 1 and then back to park, leave car running, and then check fluid level

What a bad time for a typo to creep in! ---> PARK <--- It should have read "... and then back to PARK,..." ATF levels are checked like Legacy777 said, but check is done in PARK for safety reasons. Tiny Clark
Are you towing with your forrester, or live in extremely hilly terrain? Seems kind of odd to me that the AT fluid shows signs of burning on a vehicle this new. I would drain it again and do another refill to get more fresh fluid into it. cookie
and she can get the oil and tranny filter changed at her leisure. I agree it would not be good to flash codes on such a new car.
