No, that looks like the standard early Vain style MAF used on the early turbo cars. If you were thinking that this was the 87.5 XT turbo they are very easy to tell. They have an intake manifold that has the trottle body sticking straight out the back, not straight up like this one had.

Brian,

This is an interesting piece of machinery.

The MPFI unit's in 85 were for the most part

relegated to the turbo models.

Is this an EA81 or an EA82 ?

The MAF is, as stated, the "flapper door" or vane style found on early turbo units.

(There will no doubt be people say "I saw....")

But it is a strange combo - RX seats and such

(assuming they were factory)

2 wd auto - how about badging?

GL??

interesting very interesting but....

I'm sorry Corky,

I must have missed

the turbo

and

the GL-10 part?

Were you stating facts

or possibly describing this car.

I looked at the pictures again and I think you're right. That intake piece (the one marked Multi Point F.I. ) is not of the Turbo variety. So I don't think this is a turbo car like I know I initially thought.

Just following the title of the post, although the title is very confusing if you look at the pictures. I'm wondering where he was headed with that title?

I was stating fact, probably not about this car though.

My first Subaru was one of these cars, so maybe I can shed some light on this topic.

This is a normal '85 2wd GL-10 sedan. Mine had everything listed in this thread, except that the interior was not actually the same as the RX interior. My interior had a very small checked pattern covering everything, and had solid color seat belts. From what I remember, the '85 RX interior used a larger checker pattern just in the center of the seats and along the centerline of the seat belts.

Special features I remember about this car: (some of these also appeared on other models)

-Digital Dash

-Trip Computer

-Power steering, windows, locks, and mirrors

-3 piece locking fold down rear seatback

-Special interior cloth (even on headliner and sunvisors)

-rear seat heat ducts below front seats

-rear door glass defogger vents in B-pillar trim (I really miss this)

-2wd 5spd had 3.9 diff instead of normal 3.7

-MPFI system (same as on a non-turbo '85-'86 XT)

-Gravel guards on rear doors

-plastic trim panel between rear tail lights

In '85 they didn't have the SPFI system yet, so they used the MPFI system on the high end cars to make them smoother and a little more powerful than the carbureted alternatives. From '86 on they quit using the non-turbo MPFI and just used SPFI for the non-turbo GL-10 cars.

I have the 1985 Subaru's buyer's guide, and CIS Subaru is right. Not only did the '85 GL-10 have MPFI, it was not available in 4WD (according to the booklet). That came about in '86 - the GL-10 was supposed to be a 2WD counterpart to the Turbo-Traction models, as Subaru did not put turbos in 2WD cars save the XT. There were no 2WD turbos in 1985, save the XT, which is a completely different story altogether. My parents wanted a 4WD MPFI wagon non-turbo when they bought ours in 1985, and could not get it because Subaru did not offer that combination!!

I just picked one of these 85 GL-10 MPFI and it is sweet! It has only 122K! Cost six hundred but am looking forward to putting the engine in an old gl wagon, once I can get cash.

Here is a list of quick fixes I have done so far:

Thermostat and gasket

fan and fan switch

Water pump

Belts

Extreme Fluid Flush, all fluids

Tune up - plug, wires, cap, and rotor

Went to Napa and spent fourty on junk

Other than the holes in the muffler she sound great!

I'm starting to dig the digital display

A good buddy is crushing his 90 and I can't wait to mix and match.

So yah, only one thing wrong with the beast, everything needs lube!
