Hi,

fisrt post :D

Can any one give me some dimensions of a 2WD 5 speed manual gearbox from a pre 95 liberty?

the most important ones right now are total length and width of gear housing.

Its for my EJ22 Fiat X1/9 project :)

Hello,

How is your x1/9 subaru going? What led you to chose an x1/9? I am interested in the mid-engine subaru transplant as well. 914 for me. Good luck

Hi,

I havn't done any work on it so far but I know I want the 5 speed manual box from a mid 90s liberty with an ej22 or ej20 preferably with a turbo or two. I will hopeful be using a water to air intercooler with an extra radiator in the front. What led me to choose the X1/9, well I have one! its a 1300 4sp with too many miles on the clock and things are starting to wrong, so I decided its time to think of a good transplant. I've seen V6 x1/9s and V8s and heaps of superchaged or turbo chaged 2lt lancia powered ones but not yet seen a flat four one. I thought it would be a good option moving the engine foward just a little and using a light engine like the ej (much lighter than a 2lt twin cam lancia), and I've always loved the sound of the subi flat 4 :)

anyways have a good one,

Roger.

nice site spyder!

couple of questions on your diagram of the suby engine and VW transaxle:

1. does your measurement of the engine (420mm)include the radiator? if not what does it go to? front of timing cover? front of belts/pullys?

2. any chance you could get a measurement to the center of the drive axel with the suby tranny? how close is it to the 618mm with the VW trans?

3. if im doing my conversions correctly 420mm = 16.5 inches and 618mm = 24.33 inches

thanks in advance for any help and good luck with your project!

1. 420mm is from the gearbox face to front of pulleys if I recall

2. The VW tranny /subaru dimension was taken from scrapyard parts and info supplied to me. and includes a nominal figure for an adaptor plate.

I would estimate the subaru to subaru would be 420mm for engine + the 165 to the centre line of the axle from the bellhousing ,so 585mm or 23.03 inches

3. Near enough 1inch = 25.4mm or 2.54cm

Have a look at these two sites www.ricola.co.uk my mate has done a 356 replica with WRX power , and is currently building a STI RA powered 1303 bug cabrio

Also look here http://www.petermcleod.com/petesrides.html an aussie guy with a spyder like me . (currently with tweaked wrx motor 283 bhp at the wheels)

One thing to add to my comments below. If you are looking to use a turbo motor the exhaust manifold for one bank of piston runs around the front of the engine in front of the sump and the front edge of the manifold is about level with the front of the pulleys. If you are using a non-turbo you will not have this problem as the manifold just runs back from each bank.

Outcome of this is depending what you are putting it into you may have problems clearing lower crossmembers etc. On mine with a non turbo I can probably get the engine to sit over the lower cross member with a turbo motor the engine would have to sit behind. You could overcome this with different design exhaust manifold for the turbo.

Take a look at some of the buggies and sand rails, some are mid-engined and use suitable shifts. Also try Saker who do the Subaru powered mid-engined car in Oz.

Pic of their shift lever here.

Mailed them the other day. Brett from Saker replied you can buy the bits from them to convert a 4WD 5speed WRX box to 2WD. For both the new rear cover and the gearbox adaptor to make it 2WD, talking $210 Aus. (Dirt cheap for me in the UK to import)

Now currently looking at trying to find the dimensions of the 4WD turbo box to the rear of the centre diff housing from the bellhousing. Looks like trip to the local Subaru Specialist.

Thanks, I'll ask them (Saker) about them. I was really after the assembly that connects to the back/side of the gearbox, but that picture makes the gear nob part look really easy to make. thanks again, would be nice to know how long the converted AWD box from end to end.

Hoping to get some photo's/dimensions from a turbo gearbox tommorow. Will post them on my website when I do.

The assembly at the back!!,

The shift assembly can be simple or complex. In my Spyder I have built a gear shift lever which is operated via my right hand (remember that here in the UK we drive on the left like you guys) . http://brookespeed.v21hosting.co.uk/pictures1/silver/BOT297V_14.JPG

I have one rod between the lever and the gearbox gearchange spigot

http://brookespeed.v21hosting.co.uk/pictures1/silver/BOT297V_17.JPG

It works very similar to a formula Vee gearshift. Works pretty well only oddity is that the shift is inverted at the lever (quite common in race cars anyway)http://brookespeed.v21hosting.co.uk/history/shiftgate.JPG Takes some getting used too though.

You can get the shift the correct away around but that brings more joints into the equation. More joints equals more slack in the assembly though.

I am going to take a look at the Saker set up a bit more though to work out which way that operates.

You could consider a cable shift setup too I am looking at that option as well.

Have a look in the local scrapyard for Mk2 MR2's, they use a cable setup that could possibly be used on a subaru box as the MR2 box only has one operating spigot sticking out the gearbox. Ignore the fact the MR2 box is transverse cables don't care. The little assembly that operates the spigot on the MR2 box may be usable on the Subaru box.
