I need a locker

the only locker you can buy for a subaru. a lincoln. i can intstruct you on how to use it for a dual purpose rig. i have a friend that is a very skilled welder. they are esentially spools. but there is a way to remove one axle in a couple minutes flat. which as long as you are on the pavement and fwd it drives like a open diff. pop the other axle in and wa la. the ultimate subaru traction.

 

they don't make brand name lockers for subaru. we've been trying for years, just not enough people interested to make the production and design costs. a lincoln locker is what a lot of subaru's are now using for there offroad rigs. they are the most ultimate traction devices for a subaru, and a lot cheaper than a lsd. the lsd that's going in the front of my car is costing a lot more denero than a lincoln locker ever will.

JRGaylor.. looking at that pic, I would say some good tires would have improved your chances of getting unstuck quite a bit.. the tires in the pic look small and bald(the tread area is shiny:D).. bad combo for wheelin.. never stopped me though.. getting stuck is half the fun:D

I was goofing off when I got high centered, I was watching my tires to see how they spun and how the diff. worked, so I was not watching where I was going backwards.

I have found that with my explorer that has fords trac-lok (aka posi/limited slip) that when the wheels start to spin out, I can get into 4LO and put my brakes on and power brake myself out of some places, what this does is help equalize the power go to all the wheels because none of the tires will spin.

This is what I was doing when I got stuck.

they are reliable if you have a certified welder, that knows what he's doing weld it. also that has done diffs before. which is how mine was welded. it was pre-heated, welded, and slowly cooled to make an extremely strong weld. i've never had a problem with them. and anyone i've known with them. that had them properly welded, have had no problems. the people i know that did them themselves, with there limited knowledge of how to do it properly. i've seen them break the welds and the diff is useless. but anyone i've wheeled with, can attest to the trails it has seen and the very many trails left in that locker. you are more likely to break an axle than that diff.

 

they are definately the best way to go though. if you are making an offroad subaru, the best way. which is the only way i'll go in the rear.

 

the only reason i'm going to be selling my diff. is because it's going to be easier to make a new one than change the carrier onto the new ring and pinion gears. not because it's flawed, just cause it's going to be easier with the mods being finished right now. if you don't want it that's fine. but it will be going up for sell in 6 days.

 

the person that welded mine. i've also had weld a few of the other hatch patrol members lockers welded by.

and this one, were the suby diffs that were welded. by him.

 

Tex can attest to his. he sheared his rear axle stub on the swingarm off. locker wouldn't give on the road with both axles in. for like a month of daily driving. the easiest way to prevent that is to remove an axle on the road. which takes maybe 15 minutes on a bad day.

What are the gears in the diff? and how much? I am a certified welder at the job.

There is a company (http://www.offroadlockers.com/index.html)that is coming out with a line of auto lockers, I am waitng for one or two for my explorer I have sent them a line and see they want to make one for the subaru.

FYI (everybody) this "autolocker" is locked all the time, but it will allow one wheel to go/spin faster, but not slower, cost is $200

40 dollars with the diff breather. 3.9:1 gearing. which would be the exact same as yours.

 

i'd love to have one of those lockers. but will they actual make them for our soobs?? we've tried other company's and they needed more people to want a locker than would could provide. personally i'd buy several. probably 4.
