Guest Rich Posted July 26, 2003 Share Posted July 26, 2003 Hey all, I have yet another questions about starters. I have narrowed it down to a faulty safety switch, which works about 90% of the time. What happens is that the motor will not turn over. I have replaced contacts, so I know its not that. Tried a new starter, and it wouldn't turn over at all (it was Nippondenso aftermarket brand). I measured voltage to battery pos. terminal on starter and its getting a full 12V. The safety however, is only drawing 7V. It should be 12 also. I decided to make a jumper from the safety switch terminal on the starter to the battery + terminal on the starter. As most of you have guessed, as soon as the battery was connected, the starter motor ran continuously. Not a good thing. I only let it run for about 3 seconds! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o"> So my question is, I am guessing my jumper should be from the safety switch connector to the battery + terminal on the starter, and bypass the safety terminal on the starter all together. Does this sound correct? I am getting tired of chasing this gremlin down. I could really use some help here on how to bypass this switch. Guest Cougar4 Posted July 27, 2003 Share Posted July 27, 2003 To bypass the switch all you need to do is tie a wire across the switch contacts. This will short it out and defeat the swich. Guest Rich Posted July 27, 2003 Share Posted July 27, 2003 Geln, Where are the switch contacts at? All I have is a one wire connecter to fasten to a spade terminal on the starter. I am not 100% sure it is a switch, but since it isn't pulling the voltage across during starting, I can only presume that the safety switch is going bad. Guest Cougar4 Posted July 28, 2003 Share Posted July 28, 2003 I don't know what kind of car you have. Even so, I doubt it it the safety switch, but it could be the problem. To prove it, you should be able to start it up in neutral, if it is the switch. I would check the fuselinks for a loose connnection to start with if the neutral trick doesn't work.
