91,93,94 Legacys Posted January 31, 2004 Share Posted January 31, 2004 Go with the Denso's. I put them in my 93 Legacy AWD Wagon, and their fantastic. blitz Posted January 31, 2004 Share Posted January 31, 2004 I've been running the Denso IK20 in my phase II 2.5 for about a year (10k miles). After taking a look at their condition recently, I was shocked to see that the iridium tip had become molten on two of the four plugs. Two of the tips had changed appearance from a flat, precision machined look, to a shiny little ball of slag. I chalk it up to the long and extremely thin (.4mm) tip. Next summer, I'm going to swap them out in favor of NGK Iridium IX with a shorter and thicker (.6mm) tip to see if that remedies the situation. I've never heard anyone else voice this complaint. flash Posted January 31, 2004 Share Posted January 31, 2004 Sounds expensive. I wasn't even willing to pay for the OEM's ($10 each or whatever they were). The cheapo Autolite double platinums OEM equivalents work great in my '97 deuce-and-a-half Outback. If you were running boost, that would be another story. A friend of mine is a mechanic and owns his own shop, and said he would never use Autolite plugs. He gave me the run down on them but I dont want to make this post that long. I like to buy quailty, so what ever is best I want. So we have one guy likes the Denso's one guy dont, and we have one for the NGK's. What is the phase 2 engine? I don't have a problem with Denso per se, I think they make a fine product. I've run their standard U-Groove plugs for almost 200,000 miles in my last car (not one set, I changed 'em regularly). I'm just making the observation that the iridium tips melted on my iridium Denso's. I think there's a limit to how thin the electrode can be made. Also the Denso Iridiums are way expensive. 99obw Posted February 1, 2004 Share Posted February 1, 2004 I have been running the autolite platinums in my dodge for almost 30k, very happy with them. I would not run the autolites in a subaru but I see no reason to not run them in domestic makes. I am on my third set if NGK platinums in the outback at 60k intervals with flawless performance. timn29 Posted June 7, 2004 Share Posted June 7, 2004 Oh boy, I wish I would have read this thread prior to installing a set of Autolite Double Platinums. I was looking to get a set of Champions, but saw the Autlolites and thought, "Double Platinum! They must be good." So, what kind of trouble am I looking at? Should I sweat it or keep 'em in?
