can anyone help with a tranny problem?Just bought the car ,low price-182000 miles, from a neighbor .She put a couple thousand into it in the last 2 yrs-axles ,tires, alignment.,starter,t-belt,waterpump,brakes,ect,but when the cel came on she bailed. The car runs ok-26,28 mph.The trans acts wierd.Overdrive wont engage untill apx. 63mph,it doesnt downshift, except manuelly, the shift point for 1-2,and2-3 dont seem to change much with throttle pressure. A real puzzle,-3rd gear seems to freewheel-off the gas-800rpm,on gas 2500 at 50mph-something like that I,ve been reading, pulled the codes #31 in tcu and ecu..I,m working on that now, reading the test and adjustment, its in my garage, but how do i now if the tranny is mechanicly ok? The Chilton manuel showed a band ajustment,I think there on crack too!I have driven it about 600 miles to beshore every thing else was good enough to bother chasing this little glich. I,l be back to report on the tps cleaning, testing: code erase exercise. But has anyone else had these problems? I,m a new member,1st Subaru, but my girlfriends 95 legacy sold me on them.Thanks.

In my oppinion i would clear the codes... and then take it to a trans shop or mechanice shop that has a trans flushing machine.

Here it costs me about 85 bucks to have a shop flush about 20 qt's threw it till it is clean. It has fixed quit a few sticking valves in the trannies and have extended the life a few of these trannies and made them shift better..... NOT saying that it will fix evryones problems but it hasnt hust any of mine!

If that doesnt fix your problem then go for the codes again and maybe change the TCU ( I have a few of them around here ) and if that fixes it then you will have a cleean flushed tranny with clean fluid in it!

Most interesting news! just got in from the garage. I tried to erase the code by the battery disconnect method overnite, didn,t work,so took the car out and saw it did its 1-2 and 2-3 shift at 3200 rpm,s ,regardless of throttle application..Came back and tried the other method, connecting both black and green connectors under dash, shift park to neutral, step on gas to floor, take out and drive,NO LUCK! THEN I measured for 4.4 to 4.8 volts at tbs connector NO voltage with key on,but when i would plug it in there was a buzzing sound from the tranny pan that would go away if i opened the throttle. NOW it gets fun! I traced the red wire and found it cut at the big connector behind the battery, but thats not all. The black and white wires are joined to a green with red tracer and black wire respectively.IS this a trick to get around a failed tbs(which seems to do ok on my resistence test) or a failed tcu?I,m an ASE master tech, but maybe not the smartest one DUHH!

By the way,my names dan ,And thanks! You don,t happen to have any tps connector pig tails around,do you? I think my next move should be to jump wire it correctly and(look for the smoke?) see what happens, and I hate to hack into a good harness . WE HAVE SUPERBOWL AND BABY BACK RIBS AHEAD! DAN

Dan,

First thing i would do is make sure all the connections are good and proper. I don't quite follow what was exactly done to bypass something.

You'll find quite a bit of tech info you can d/l, fsm scans, engine & electrical section from the fsm which should help you diagnose the problem on my server

http://www.main.experiencetherave.com:8080/subaru_manual_scans

The individual scans are from my 90's fsm....the other pdf complete scan is from the 92 fsm....but are pretty much identical.
