1995 Dodge Neon.Free from CL.

Recommended Posts

I scored this neon off CL today. It was in the driveway of a house that a realtor lady had just sold. The owner of the house, and the realtor needed it gone before the new owners would move in.

Anyway, its a bit of a project. Blown headgasket at the very least. But,its a 5 speed,Sport Coupe with only 130k miles on it. DOHC and,I got a supposedly "good junkyard engine" too.

The PO was more of a "replace the engine" kinda guy instead of a "fix the existing engine" kinda guy. Me,I'm a fix the existing engine kinda guy. But,I had to take the extra engine 'cause they needed all of it gone.

So,I joined the neon.org board today. I really have no particular interest in this sort of car,but my 15 yr old daughter does. In fact, out of the three subaru's that I have in my corral right now,she would rather drive this thing when that time comes.

I'm gonna give the headgasket a whirl and whatever else may be wrong. I'm sure glad it's a 5 speed and not an auto.

Well,it turns out it wasn't a blown headgasket after all. I was getting some really weird compression readings at first. I mean like 0 psi to 120 psi to 150 and then back to zero. Strange. So, I put some Marvel Mystery oil in the cylinders and let it set for a couple weeks.

I blew the oil out of the cylinders and was getting some decent compression. At least 120 psi on all four. I put the plugs back in and she fired right up.

After driving around for a couple hours,I pulled it back into the shop. I'm getting 150 psi on all four cyl. Runs pretty good.

Free Rice.

More than likely some of the compression rings were frozen/rusted into the grooves. I've run into this before.

Seems the tell tale sign is really weird compression readings. Like zero to over a hundred and back to zero.

Some marvel oil into they cyl. and put the plugs back in and crank for all its worth. It forces the oil past the rings and eventully they free up. If you can get it to start, they have no choice but to free up all the way.

At least thats been my experience on a couple cars that have sat for a long time.

Nice Neon! ... I Like it and I'm Glad to Know that the Engine was Good... I Like your Idea with the Marvel Mystery Oil.

Sorry for Hijack your Thread but I have a similar situation and No Experience with Marvel Mystery Oil and also I just Obtained a car that Sat unstarted for Several Months...

I Already Changed the Head Gasket and Fixed the Valve's Seals... Seems like the Oil Rings from the Pistons are Sticky, 'cos the Car Blows a White Cloud of Smoke when is First Started Early Mornings... Otherwise it Runs Awesome!

(For more info see This Thread)

But I am Not Sure about the MMO ... Should I Take out the SparkPlugs and Pour Some MMO there? ... if So: How Much is the Suggested Amount? ... Or due to the Fact that the Engine is Already Working almost Fine, Just Burnin' some Oil: Should I Pour the Pint Bottle onto the Crakcase?

Kind Regards.
