Strut R&R

OK talking about an EA-82 4x4 Wagon. I bought 2 new struts but have only replaced the drivers side as of now because it needed the attention.

Put it all back together and buzzed the new nyloc nut onto the strut shaft to attach it to the strut top. The nylon grabbed the threads and just turns the shaft with out tightening up. I've got about 1/8th inch gaposis which makes a terrible racket while driving. I don't want to chew up the shaft with vice grips and I don't have a strap wrench to keep it from spining while I torque it down. I didn't notice any flat spots for a wrench and the mud gaurd is pretty much in the way to keep anything from being easy. Should I crank up the adjusters? Lube the nyloc nut? Looking for the obvious answer that isn't so obvious to me or any suggestions. Thanks.
