Funny Noise In Rear Of Drivetrain Ea81

Recommended Posts

Hey ALL, Well heres another question... My 1984 wagon 4 speed dual range makes a deep bass sound humming noise in the rear WHEN.....

the cars 4wd is in use only when my foot is totally off the gas pedal... When I depress the gas pedal the humming noise goes away... What do you guys think????

I have changed the gear oil and put a quart of ATF in with it and the manual trans fluid was also changed....

Thanks All for looking at my question..... Joe in Pa

Joe,

I did the U-Joints in my wagon and it cleared up a similar noise. Also vibration on the highway went away. Get underneath and wiggle the driveshaft. There should be minimal to zero play in the U-Joints. I brought it somewhere, they said the joints were fine, I made them change 'em anyway and it fixed the problem. Maybe you need a D/R 4 speed with 76K LOL!

Ah Joe in pa, would you be so kind as to explain this statement?

"I have changed the gear oil and put a quart of ATF in with it and the manual trans fluid was also changed...."

This statement was made with reference to a noise coming from the rear end so....

Now that is either real bad wording or you are running the rear diff FULL of ATF?? It's capacity is just a little under a quart??

The trans has a capacity of a bit over 3 qt.

Where did you get this recipe for drive line disaster??

You might want to try some Redline NS - I do not know why you have so much ATF in either place where gear oil belongs.

Maybe for a quick clean?? Maybe you like to stir mud?

MAYBE Chris is correct and you just need his tranny??

I would be very interested in where you got the information you are basing this decision to toast your tranny or rear diff.

I bet you do not answer this post.

Please, prove me wrong

Sure why wouldnt I answer the post Skip.... Well poor wording it is.... The manaul trans has gear oil and some some ATF in it... The rear dif. just has gear oil in it....... I guess I need a english comp class....

Skip you seem like you are pissed at me???

The ATF thing with gear oil idea came from a thread several months ago... I also spoke to a trans shop and a dealer that just sells subaru's... Both have told me that some ATF in the trans worked well to quiet some grinding noise in the older subaru trans... The trans shop owner has even done this in his subaru with good results.... Since my knowledge of cars is limited I try to ask several people in the field what they think as well as fellow board members like yourself that have vast knowledge of these cars... The trans has been working fine its just some noise in the rear....

If you think I should change the trans fluid again I will do so ASAP... After all I love the car and have no intention on off roading her... I use my wagon as a daily driver and would like to have the car for years to come.... I even on the way to work take a alternate route to avoid over taxing the cars engine on steep inclines...

On one thread I have read that some guys put a quart of ATF in the engine to clean it out and quiet things down.. That I have not done..... Thanks Skip for replying back... if you think I should cahnge the trans fluid again I will do so.... Joe
