Accell Coil.. been on there for months.. no problem Just put a new set of NGKs (.050, then down to .048)in there, along with some accell 8mm wires.. Starts great, idles fine.. Accelerates fine when cold... Since the wires and plugs, Its been a little gutless in the mid-top end range.. Had to drive 4 hours to Austin today.. Now, after reaching operating temp, when ever the Turbo engages, it bucks and has very limited power.. Passing anyone is an absolute joke and my gas mileage, which has never been great, has gone down he crapper.. under 20 on the highway. I have removed my boost controller.. no change, except the car is even slower now:mad: I will be in Austin all week, probably not driving much.. But also not having much opprotunity to tinker with the car.. then the 4 hour drive north.. am hoping to have a massive flash of insight before then. calebz Posted February 9, 2004 Author Share Posted February 9, 2004 Speed.. No vaccum advance on 87 and up, so no dice there Cougar. I check to see if I had knocked a vacuum hose loose or anything like that, but couldn't find anything. Don't hear it sucking air anywhere..No change in idle.. acceleration is even ok until boost hits...problem didn't arise until after spark plug and wire change.. intake gakets replaced about 3-4 months ago.. The car has always had a tiny bit of surging, but that has been the norm for both of my turbo soobs.. this is just ridiculous though. I would check all the SP connections, they have a habit of not going on all the way when they are new. Same with the disty cap. Oh, and make sure the cap is ok too. I changed the cap 6 months ago, but then switched distributors. different year disty.. different cap style.. and here I have been thinking I have a new cap on there. Subarutex Posted February 9, 2004 Share Posted February 9, 2004 Could be simple as a leak in the plenum. Soon as boost comes on, it leaks out. So the car ends up runnning way rich. Check the tightness of the 2 rubber connectors. Maybe you took the plenum off when you did the plugs, and didn't get it seated properly... Skip Posted February 9, 2004 Share Posted February 9, 2004 Forgive me if I missed this. I am prone to try and not overlook the simple fixes. How old is the fuel filter? The leak in the air input stsyem (turbo to plenum) will cause plumes of black (read very rich) smoke out the rear, have you seen this? If not... It may be a fuel delivery problem. mdjdc Posted February 9, 2004 Share Posted February 9, 2004 as you know turbos have a knock sensor and this is exactly the thing that happened to me when mine was going bad and/or poorly connected. Forkspear Posted February 10, 2004 Share Posted February 10, 2004 My 88 RX started doing that same thing a few days ago. Runs good when cold then slows down after it warms up. I think I have a boost leak. If I ease onto the gas I can hear rushing air before the turbo begins to spool. Im going to work on it tomorrow if I get a break at work.
