98 legacy outback engine swap jdm ej25

Hello all,

I am a moderate mechanic with a large honey-do list. Just enough to do some damage.

I have had my 98 subaru legacy outback for about 5 years now. 152K. This past year I started having overheating problems that blew the head gasket. Along with that, the transmission started to slip in 3rd gear and was hard shifting in 1st. Engine rebuild yes, transmission rebuild , no-way. The shops cringed when I said "subaru AWD transmission".

I decided to buy a used jdm ej25 engine and transmission with 52k. I had my local shop install it. Everything seems fine. But driving it seems different . I am getting abnormal front wheel spinning and the wheels track to the direction I am pointing. It drives fine when I am not pushing it hard. It may be more power but it just seems odd.

The TIN ( transmission Identification Number) is TZ102Z1AAA-CC on the remplacement, my old one is TZ102ZZDBA-KF. Could this be a rear differential gear ratio problem?

Any ideas?

:banana:I got the front wheel tracking to stop by putting a fuse in the FWD slot and disabling the AWD. Now it makes me think that it is the rear differential.

Searching that transmission I found that a 1994 legacy 250t had this transmission.

What is the difference in a 98 subary legacy outback rear diff and a 1994 legacy 250t rear diff?
