Oil leak

Recommended Posts

well when i purchaced my wagon it had an oil leak, no really bad, just leaks onto the exahsut so when the exhaust heats up it stinks like crap and smoke comes out from under the car and hood.

does anyone know where it could be leaking from, how hard is it to fix, etc, etc. if its easy ill do like tomarrow since its mid-winter break, if its had, ill take it to the guys up at Brain Subaru Clinic in burien, wa. ive known the owners for years because of my grandpa, i might also get a job there soon.

thanks for any information,

Shean

The places that tend to leak a lot and get oil on the exhaust as you describe are the cam cases, valve covers, and cam seals.

If you've got some time and would like to get a lot better aquanted with your sooby, it's really not that difficult, but rather time consuming, to do all of these, which is probably the best solution. Of course, this entails removing and replacing the timing belts, and if your lifters make any noise, this is the time to clean them.

i woild say its the cam cover, as mine leaks on the passenger side header

you can service it in the car, although i find it easier to remove the nut from the motor mount on one side, and jack the motor up 2-3 inches, so you can get a socket in there. less frustrating than a wrench, or your soclet hetting stuck because it backs into the framerail

ok thanks guys, i got a 2-post and 4post lifts at school so ill just talk with my teacher and see if i can bring it in for like a week and do these.

thanks for the heads up.

also fox, that doesnt bother me since i have the ratcheting style combination wrenches, so most of the time i dont use sockets. :D

Thanks,

Shean

Oh and if you re-seal the cam cases, be sure to use Permatex anaerobic sealant and not just plain old RTV silicone. I've heard good things about both the grey and red Permatex, so I don't know which one of those to use, but make sure you use one of those. If you can find ThreeBond 1215, that's what is recommended by the FSM, but it's really hard to come by.
