3at -> 4at

I know, I know - the idea seems silly. However, a lot of clutch work kills my knees, so I need to stick with an automatic transmission. Anyway, running my XT through the gears gets me to ~85 before power tapers off - I can cruise at ~95 if I push it, but it's difficult. Using the gear selector, 2nd tops out at 75, so I figure one more forward gear would allow me to hit ~120 or so (which would be nice for embarrasing ricers). So... how hard would it be to swap my 3AT for a 4AT, on an FWD?

Cool, we don't have many NA xt owners on the board. Welcome! My neighbor has one w/ a rice muffler on his, you can hear him coming 2 blocks away, you can tell its a subaru, they all have a distinct sound, even the new ones. I feel your pain, my ea81t has an 3at, it really holds the car back!

Akira is correct, the

4EAT (4 speed Electronic Transmission) has an electronic control unit. The 3AT does not.

You could possibly swap the TCU, the wiring, and the speedometer (has a speed sensor in it)

I am sorry I do not know if the mounts are the same.

But it would bolt to your engine.

Sorry not much help

Excuse me if I am stepping out of bounds.

Gregg do you by chance mean TIPtronic?

If so...

The 4EAT is a very interesting specimen for this type of shifting -

as with this transmission all shifting is all done by solenoids and remote control so to speak.

Paddle shifters ala F1 anyone??

Sorry for butt heading in

I could never get the spelling of that word down to save my life!

If a 5MT could be wired to operate tiptronically, I'd be happy, since it seems it would be easier to mate the 5MT with a car that orgininally had a 3AT than it would be to swap in a 4AT.

As it is, I have a bad habit of manually operating my gear selector (I strart out in D, then drop down to 1 and work my way through when I feel like kicking things into high gear).
