I think I just blew my engine

Well... my Loyale has been having some oil burning problems for a couple months now, and I think today it finally let go. I was cruising along on the interstate and noticed tons of smoke in the rearview mirror. Huge, billowing clouds of mostly whitish smoke. Got off at the next exit and pulled over... when I slowed down I noticed power loss and rough running and a noise almost like the exhaust had come apart right at the y pipe. When I stopped the car there was smoke coming out from under the hood. Popped the hood and smelled the smell of burning coolant, and found coolant EVERYWHERE. There was also a pretty thick trail of fluids that the car had left while it was moving. After the coolant dried I noticed the smell of oil. Popped the oil cap and found milkshake on the bottom of it. Yep, I think this engine is history.

 

I don't have too much experience with dead engines- what do you guys think may have happened?

 

I'm really in trouble now. I have no car, as the turbo XT is down with a bad head gasket. My job is 30 miles away. I have almost no money. I'm really ****ed now. I'm gonna go get drunk.

Well... the whole time this was going on (about a mile) the temp gauge never moved.

 

Either way this engine is trashed, what with the oil burning problem and all. I have no idea what I'm gonna do- hopefully my boss will let me keep my job if I don't show up for a few days. As for where I'm gonna get the money for a new engine....????

if you are really desparate you could try a bottle or two of that "Block Seal" stuff, it comes in a copper and black can. Basically you drain it out completely, mix this stuff with water, pour it in, let it run for like, 20 minutes or something (Add water if necessary) and then you empty it out again, and then run it again for like 5 minutes with it empty, and it bakes the sealer in..

**NOT** a permanent repair, but I'm sure it would help if you need some way to get to work...

Sounds like a H/Gasket or a blown head to me...

What's the oil look like???

if you do decide to use some sort of block sealer, whatever you do, be careful to NOT overheatd it or heat the motor up beyond normal operating temp or else it will break the sealer and then....no more sealer. I have to agree with everyone else on it being either a blown headgasket or a bad head but I think its more of a headgasket problem because I don't think EA82 heads would just do that if the temp doesn't exceed the operating temp

Sorry, but I'm not interested in buying another car. I'm going to just drop an engine in this one one way or another and be done with it.

 

As for working in the junkyard... I work in an overpriced, high end junkyard. We only have 1 EA82 and my boss wants $300 for it. I don't think so!

 

Snotrocket- thanks for the offer. If I only *could* ride on over and slap one together I would. As of right now I have absolutely no transportation. Hoping to get some Soob wrenchers together this weekend at my place and take care of it. I need to get this thing going ASAP so I can get back to work.

Well, my EA82 failed at around 175K miles. Running on 3 cyls.

 

I shopped around for a while and used EA82 were in the $600 range, and that's with some miles on them! I couldn't believe these junk yards.

 

I finally found a parts car for $200 -- that might be your best bet. Ebay!

there are always more engines and cars around.. although my pm is a solution temporarily..

 

there is this wagon in teh scrap yard down here for $350.. auto 2wd needs tranny.. or could be a shot gov and slippin bastard like mine.. .. at anyrate, its in like new condition, no rust, etc, very clean inside.. i know the engine runs smooth as new as well.. i'm sure your loyales 4wd train will fit right in :)

 

either way let me know what goes on.. will help out if i can..
