Hard is it to downgrade a EJ25D to a EJ22EC?

EJ22 came out of a 95' L.

EJ25D is in a 96' GT.

Since it's only 20HP difference, I may downgrade to increase car relaibility. Plus I don't have a EJ25D and I alrdy have a EJ22, so we'll see.

I know it'd bolt in and such; but besides that is there anything hard?

Will the harness be plug and play?

Should I switch out the EJ25D ECU to match the EJ22?

What about EGR b/s?

The EJ22 in question.

I'm debating it really. ;)

if it's an auto then your EJ22 has EGR and will plug and play and bolt right in, it's hardly any different than swapping another EJ225 in place.

if it's a manual then you won't have EGR on that EJ22. you can still install it and just not have EGR like i did you'll just have a check engine light. doesn't matter in my state so i ignore it.

the EJ22 is a fantastic motor, it is far more reliable than the EJ25, i'd stick with it. the timing belt kits on ebay are like $60 instead of $200 too for all new timing belt pulleys and the belt. and it's non interference.

See, that's the tricky part. The Ej22 is from a manual; so no EGR besides an airpump in the passanger side of the bay which I took out (by the horn).

My Ej25D subie is an automatic TZ102Z2ABA-CH. But I'm curious about the check engine light:

couldn't I just run the Ej22 ECU inplace of the EJ25D when I do the swap and ti'd take care of emissions issues? I don't really care since my state has no emissions testing, misc but would love to have a functioning check engline light besides having to go code reader and misc. ;)

I'm debating it, I'm thinking I'll may just downgrade to the EJ22... just may do it.

I did it to my 98 LEgacy GT... I bought the car with a blown motor, so I cant tell you if I felt a power loss, but the EJ22 runs great even with the A/C on and gets over 20MPG..... DO IT!!!! It's plug and play, its just like swaping out the same motor... DO IT!!!

so far no one has been able to install a non-EGR EJ into an EJ25 without getting the check engine light. all of the "easy" stuff doesn't work. swapping ECU's won't work.

i installed a non-EGR engine, non-EGR ECU and still get the code. so the ECU's are just interchangeable between the two.

so i cut the EGR wiring so the ECU can't "see it" and installed a non-EGR ECU and it still gives me the codes. no one here was able to explain that or offer suggestions (you can read my threads about it)

someone else spliced in a resistor to "mimic" the EGR and that didn't work for various reasons.

find a solution and i'll pay you for it! LOL.

so yeah, there's no easy way around it, you're going to have a check engine light if you install a non-EGR engine into your EGR equipped vehicle. didn't stop me from doing it, i don't care. but i keep my car fairly well maintained so i'm not too worried about check engine lights. if the car ever runs bad i'll check it and i can check it periodically too. code readers are $30 on ebay and well worth it.

What the crap batman?! Did someone take their car into the lake and forget it? I like the 22 but the 25 in my opinion is just as reliable. They had problems with head gaskets but that was fixed, although the timing belt price is a plus with the 22. If all else fails on the CEL coming on, Megasquirt it! :)

EJ25D spun a bearing. :(

So heres my battle plan: Pull my EJ25D, get short block. Learn how to to fix it properly (2/3 weeks just working on weekends/after work.) after I got that down, i'll pull the EJ22 and reswap over my loyal EJ25D and YAY!

But anyway guys, when I grab the EJ22 engine out of the car; what should I replace on it?

I would replace all of the timing components... But thats just me. Maybe the oil pump and the water pump which is part of the timing componets...its always nice to have fresh bearings in there! That thing needs to be scrubbed with some serious TLC!!!
