It has these ailments: -clutch pack binding transmission -slightly leaky steering rack -worn brakes -rusted tailgate handle -check engine light on (don't know diagnosis) This is now a second car (kept for winter use this year). The question is with the above afflictions, can I get another year or 2 out of it? It isn't a daily driver anymore, and once the spring comes it will be driven even less. Should I: -keep it and not fix anything -sell it now -fix a coulle things to keep it alive and use it only during the winter My primary driver is not good in snow nor has any cargo space so this is an ideal auxiliary car if it is working. mranlet Posted February 21, 2004 Share Posted February 21, 2004 I'd say fix it and keep it. If you let it deteriorate, you'll get virtually nothing for it when you do sell it. If you keep it and not fix it, it can get dangerous. Unless you really need the money, there are a lot of times when a wagon will come in very handy. Most of the parts you need you can get at an auto recycler's or junkyard for cheap. There's no doubt that you could get another 2 years of winter-only use out of it as is, but if you don't fix it, you will start to develop other problems... -MR Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You could handle the steering rack with frequent fluid to ups - maybe there is a sealent/additive? I think there is rusty handle repair instructions here on the forums somewhere - try a search Get Autozone to read the CEL, then clear it and see if it comes back. may not be serious if the car runs well and may not return. The duty solenoid 'C' /clutch pack is fairly major but I sometimes ask myself this;"How many monthly paymenyts on a new car would fix my present car?" PLUS - you know it's history - buy another used car and you may get someone elses headache. Investigate code first, work on or patch up the steeing, hatch handle and brakes this summer, fix the tranny before next winter. You might even be able to put it in FWD mode for summer use until you save your pennies for the tranny work. I say fix it - no brainer!
