impreza778 Posted August 29, 2010 Share Posted August 29, 2010 I just picked up a 2001 Forester (5 spd MT, EJ25) with 276000 miles that is incredibly clean and runs well, but it only has 1-3 and reverse, the previous owner said that it "locked" into 4th or 5th gear and wouldn't come out and once it did they didn't work anymore. I think it might be time for a new trans and haven't looked into what is wrong with this one but I found a cheap trans ($300) from a 1998 Legacy GT and I was wondering if it would swap easily (I know it should bolt up) or if I will have issues with the ECU or the teeth on the gears lining up? The transmission codes are: 1998 LGT: TY752V2DAA 2001 Forester: TY755VC1BA Any help on this would be awesome! Also, I've never opened a trans or worked on one, but would it be better/easier to repair the one in it? I don't mind doing the work and learning how to, but the $300 fix sounds easier to me... jgrote Posted August 30, 2010 Share Posted August 30, 2010 I believe it will physically bolt up, but you may have issues with final drive, clutch type, and speedo. 1) Make sure the final drive is the same for both tranmissions. 2) Some subbies have push type and some have pull type clutch forks. Verify the 2 are the same. 3) Swap your speed sensor. You may also want to sign up at http://www.subaruforester.org/ and place a wanted ad. There are a few people on there that have done 6 speed swaps, so that may be good place to look. Come to think of it though, I believe they may all be XT guys. I believe your car should have a 4.44 final gear. Disclaimer I am no expert when it comes to mt's in subbies. impreza778 Posted August 30, 2010 Author Share Posted August 30, 2010 I checked this website (http://spda-online.ca/modules/tinycontent/rewrite/tc_28.html) and both final drive ratios are 4.11 and they are both push clutch type, so that is good, Ive heard of a speed sensor, but I have no idea what it is, where it is or what it does... any help? jgrote Posted August 30, 2010 Share Posted August 30, 2010 (edited) From what I have gathered, it is held in with one bolt and is easily changed when the trans is out. I wouldn't worry too too much about that part. Edit: The only other thing I can think of is whether the have the same axle output styles. idosubaru Posted August 30, 2010 Share Posted August 30, 2010 look up the part numbers online ebay, subaru online vendors and compare speed sensor part numbers. if they're the same golden, if not then you probably just install the one int he current trans into the "new" trans. a used trans is how i would also fix this, sounds like the right track to me. not sure what an "LGT" is, can you clarify that? if it's a GT then it should be a hydraulic clutch, not a cable. really doesn't matter a ton as the clutch cable parts should transfer over - just swap the fork and ball under it i believe. with almost 300,000 miles probably a good idea to get that fork out of there anyway, they do occassionally fail. the inner/outer won't be an issue in 2001. idosubaru Posted August 30, 2010 Share Posted August 30, 2010 i thought that's what it was just making sure, just surprised it had a cable clutch. all the legacy GT's i've had were hydraulic clutch. just retain all the cable clutch bits off the forester and swap them onto the new trans. i haven't done it, but have heard, through the truth factory known as the interweb, that they are interchangeable. hydraulic clutches are less reliable than cables anyway with the number of mc, slave cylinder, and hose failures they have. good luck!
