snag on the clutch/trans install...confirm please?

Car: My 83 Turbowagon project.

Engine: ea81T

Trans: 88 RX 5spd FT4wd

These cars never came with a manual trans. The ea81 flywheel to engine bolts seem to be 9MM diameter.

A VERY reputable source says that the holes on an ea82 flywheel are 1MM bigger than ea81 flywheels are.

What has been done to get around this when using the ea82 flywheel or am I supposed to use the ea81 7 and 7/8 flywheel with the ea82 clutch kit?

I would use the ea82 flywheel with ea81 bolts. I know the throwout bearings are the same size on the two flywheels. I needed a flywheel when I put the turbo wagon back together. I found an ea81 flywheel. It was going to work fine until I tryed to bolt it up. The holes lined up but they were too small for ea82 bolts.

Hi Shawn This is Jerry, i just got done with my 86 hatch with the turbo tranny. You use the Ea81 9 inch flywheel that comes off of your 86 brat. Then you use the Ea82 clutch disc, then you use the Ea81 pressure plate. Then you use the Ea82 throw out bearing. When it is all done the starter will have to be spaced out 1 washer distance the size of the starter bolt or you won't be able to disengage the starter. Any questions let me know Thanks Jerry

Yes, on my wagon, I used the 4wd ea81 flywheel with the ea82 clutch disc, and ea82 pressure plate...

if it makes any difference, I bought an aftermarket ea82 clutch kit (meant for a 88 4wd turbowagon) and it came with the ea82 throwout bearing too... it works smooth like my XT! and the timing marks line up well...

reccomended for you to do, take a ea81 NA bellhousing, (assuming it fits the ea81T) and the ea81 4wd flywheel, ea81 flywheel bolts, ea82 clutch and tranny parts....

that way your bolts all fit, and the timing marks are too (do the marks on a ea81NA and turbo line up in comparison to the crankshaft? so if you keep the appropriate bellhousing with its corrisponding flywheel they would be correct?) do you even understand what I am trying to say? (i think I have confused myself again lol!)

anyways, good luck on deciding on what to do.

Forkspear had the opposite problem.

Ratty2Austin I think I got 99% of that deciphered, no worries.

I have decided to use the 1984 ea81 flywheel (the bigger clutch type one). I want to be 100 percent sure my new CCR engine isn't messed up by a wobble or anything. Anal me, sorry.

My problem is I got the xt6 clutch kit. I asked before but still dont understand....is the disc itself bigger around or is it just thicker....asking because there was a post out here saying you have to turn the flywheel BIGGER on an ea82 flywheel for the xt6 disc but it don't think it said bigger in which way.

Does my flywheel need to be turned THINNER or does the clutch surface area need to be EXPANDED for the xt6 disc?
