mods for a 87 GL

your carby wagons not gonna be a speed demon, but cutting up your air filter box to allow better flow through the filter would be a start. Then get rid of the choking stock muffler and replace it with a performance muffler of your choice. For more gains you could redo the exhaust from the cat back. If thats not enough you can upgrade to a weber carb, which would set you back around $3-400. This would probably be the biggest improvement. Then theres ignition: Get a performance coil and wires, gap your plugs .45-.5. As for the turbo idea, best not to venture into a project like that if you're new to working on cars. If you want a quick suby you'll want to find a turbo RX or XT. Do a search on these items and you'll probably come up with more detail.

Not unless you have a Weber to go with it. There is no airbox (Turbo, MPFI,SPFI only) mod on a carbed Soob either, it has a standard aircleaner on top of the carb.

Get some good tires if you want to RallyX.

Plug wires and a hotter coil will help, along with the exhaust.

yea my exhaust is busted to hell... i guess the good thing about this car being a project is that since i got it for free, spending money on it isnt as big of a deal... any suggestions for exhaust? ive thought about just picking up a cherry bomb for now but im skeptical because of the hype

If you have some mechanical know how it is simple to swap the carb. Stock carb is simple to remove/install and the weber has even less to it than the stock. If you are the type of person that goes to the grease monkey to have your oil changed I would not suggest you attemp the job. Maybe the best thing is for you to meet up with someone who has done a carb swap before. This way nothing gets messed up and you gain some experience.

cherry bombs are good, cheap, and i swear by them

you could tackle swapping the carb yourself, and have the pro just tune it in, save on labor costs.

just remember, anything hands on you do with your car, just ask about it here, you will be sure to get some excellent expertise!

as far as turbos, it would be better and more economical to swap in an entire turbo motor.

the motor swap its self will be all bolt-in, but you will have to get heavy-duty into the electrical, to wire in the ecu and harness that came from the car the turbo motor came form

you would have to swap the whole motor, because the turbo intake is dual ports, and will not bolt up to the carb motor.

get the accel super stock coil, about 30 bucks. you can gap the plugs to .045-.050, and run one of theose "custom fit" cut to length make your own accel 8mm wire sets, about the same price

if you want a turbo, buy a turbo motor.

From what has been said on the board, its easier to just get a turbo'd motor.

If you really want to go this route, The Scooby started a post sometime last week about puttin a turbo on his carbbed wagon.

Theres good info there.. Check it out

I have a 87 GL wagon... its a 1.8 caburated 5-speed 4x4.

ru4x4ever My bad i was ASSUMEing it was it was fuel injected.

my 85 wagon 10 spd 4x4 with the hitachi carb and dist seems to enjoy: removal of emissions controls, 2" single pipe mandrel bent from y-pipe to the glasspack, accel 8140C coil NGK plugs vac advance connected directly to intake manifold, and the cheap gas with 10% etaonol!

no need to buy a "CHERRY BOMB" name brand muffler:madder:

Here in romania we are thinking like this: do the best you can but with less money. So if you are thinking to the exhaust system, try to use some 50 mm internal diameter thin tube and if you have some basic skills and one acetylene welding system youcan do everything yourself. If you want to do something COOL try to use stainless steel tubes and rear and middle silencer. You will hear some kind of engine noise like people with Remus exhaust system. And you wount have problem with corrosion. In my 87' glw Coupe I changed the air filter element with another one who permittes to the engine to absorb much easily the air and the diferense is considerable.
