you would be alot happier with a 2.2

that ej22 is considered the best motor made by many in the subaru world

the 2.5 will offer you a little more horsepower, but will cost you greatly in the reliability department, and they require a tad more room as they are quad cam...unless you go with the SOHC 2.5 which is badass, but all phase 2 and obd2...wiring headache compared to what you just did.

buy another donor car and have at it buddy...i might have another soon :D

2.5 is tight with the DOHC but is doable. You can use the same harness as a 2.2 to run an EJ25d. You can also run EJ22 heads on an EJ25 block to make a high compresion motor. It requires premium gas all the time but they have great torque.

The only issue with the EJ25d is the headgaskets. If the headgasket is caught early and replaced with the updated one, they're good for the rest of the life of the engine. If some one ran it overheated for a long time, the rod bearings can spit out soon after the new headgasket is put in.

They're not bad engines. And the power out of them is respectable.

I tore a lot of drivetrain parts up with a 2.2l, so I can imagine what I'd do with a 2.5.

The clutch will be more of a concern with the 2.5l if you're running an EA transmission. Use a high performance WRX clutch disk, XT6 pressure plate and the flywheel cut to XT6 specs and it should last a while.

The full XT6 clutch kit is working fabulously behind the frankenmotor in renob123's Brat. 100% XT6 parts from the dealer is working very well and handling the power no problem.

Do the Frankenmotor - you will like that. As noted there is nothing wrong with the EJ25D except the expensive-to-work-on heads, headgaskets and the potential that a used one has been overheated and comprimised the internals. Otherwise they are great engines and with 2.2 heads and torque cams on them they scream.

same swap as your EJ22. less reliable, more power, but as far as complexity, it's essentially the same swap you already did with the EJ22. you can yank an EJ22 and the EJ25 will plug right in. so if you want more power drop the EJ25 in yours and demote your EJ22 to your dad!
