Hi there, first post on the board (beer :D )

question mostly for euro readers as LPG seems very marginal on the other side of the pound: is LPG with the 2.5L 2000' engine a good idea ? any issues with that setup ? What sort of milleage can I expect without major problems arise ?

bottom line is i'm thinking of getting a used Outback and most of them come with LPG in France. (with petrol at 1 euro/litre don't ask why :( )

You'll loose about 15-20% power with the CNG, but its a great idea, i don't know about your refueling structure over there in france, but over here it would only work in the big cities. because its a gas, not a liquid the engine burns a lot cleaner and unlike petrol there won't be any condensation on the cylinder walls so it should last longer, longer than 300,000 isn't bad!!

If its already done from the factory i can't see any reason not to, but if you plan a conversion it may be a little bit tricky, but still may be worth doing.

I heard there could be some issues with the valves seats (don't know how to call that in english, i mean the part of the gazket on top of the cylinder where the valve close the cylinder ?)

i understand the gazket is not strong part of the engine, so...

I have no experiance with 2.5 engines but all other Subaru engines are well known as perfect convertible to LPG.

Since You live in Lille, it's not far away from the Belgian border.

I'm not sure about the French-speaking side but in Flanders and Holland are many shops who are specialised in LPG convertion.

 

There is no longer power loss with the latest developements of LPG injection. As we say here: 'it runs like a sewing machien'. :)

 

But the whole installation became pretty expencive, about 2500 Euro all included.

 

There are cheaper systems but than You have powerloss and more technical problems.

I understand Subaru Belgium has some factory conversions available as well, probabely the same as the one sold in by subaru France ?

Do you have any info wether that system is of the latest generation you're talking about ?

My point is that 90% of the used outbacks i could find on the french market have the factory LPG conversion kit: that's the one I investigating on ;-)

just to answer to another question regarding the LPG distribution network: yes it's quite easy to find LPG anywhere in france but I reckon you'll have to use standard fuel once in a while specialy in remote country side or mountain. No problem arround big cities or along major roads...
