PnP Windsor

Recommended Posts

Hi all...

I went by the PnP in Windsor yesterday, looking for a better Hitachi than I have, my throttle shaft is worn out.

the only '80-84 car there was a Nice Hatchback, 4wd, perfect maroon body, no bumpers. Unfortunately it had a bad engine fire

then there was what looked like an XT6, but the back of the car said it was a GL. SPFI and manifold ready to go, the heads are gone off the car.

there were also two Peugots with the 15 inch mag wheels like these on my car...great shape. (missing two lug nuts;-))

can't afford a redline weber kit right now, but maybe i should just go for it.

Hi Miles,

thanks! there were a few 85-88 EA82 series, one had a decent looking carb. So I would need that AND the airfilter housing?

I don't need to get smogged again, so the different aircleaners are fine...

Dave... are you planning any more trips to the Rancho area? Last time I was at the yard here, they were down to 1 row of subaru's, but they had a few EA81's left. I need to make a trip there myself to get another hitachi for my wagon, maybe if you can find the time we can make a yard run.

yeah, if you mount an ea82 carb, you will need the LOWER air filter housing. the housing all hooks up the same, in all the same places, its just the hole for the carb is bigger.

the lids and the filter themselves are the same between the 2

Dave, I don't know if your car has an 02 sensor

and therefore an ECU.

But when shopping for a carb you may want to watch for

the feedback type Hitachi's.

The mix and match of using one on a car not equiped

with the duty solenoids could prove frustrating.

I do believe they were prevalent in CA

Dave,

I have a carb from my 84 which ran fine when I took it out to swap in a Weber. Yours for postage.

I used to live in Cannon Beach, OR. I sold you a buncha stuff out of an 82 I was parting out, including the motor. Met you halfway between CB and Mendocino by some town's post office, then we had lunch. About three/four years ago I guess.

Heck yes I remember you!

That is the trans I am going to put in the '84. The one I drove up to meet you in got buried in the sand on the beach here, high tide took care of all the rest....like the carb I got from you, my digital camera, tools, VOM, etc.

I did get the dog out!

my present carb has a badly worn throttle shaft, can you check that one and see if it wiggles?

if not, i will take it!

Incidentally - ALL the hitachi's I have looked at have worn throttle shafts, but it doesn't seem to affect them much. The one I just rebuilt and installed on my Brat wiggles quite a bit, and came from a car with 189k on it. Runs PERFECTLY. Also - if that really is your problem, then might I sugest giving CCR a call. They sell "throttle bases" with new shafts for $40 plus a core. All you would have to do is bolt on your existing carb to the throttle base, and send the old one back to them. The throttle base itself is iron, and the shaft is Brass, so just a new shaft is all you really need...... I still think this isn't your problem tho. What are your symptoms?

Sounds like a dance step...

Symptoms:

set idle, fine for a few days, then idles too high or low.

reset idle, ditto

burble in exhaust, usually there is the nice steady purr, but with a burble in it occaisonally. I've been told that is a vacuum leak.

the car does run pretty damn well, got over 300 miles on the last tank, filled it before the light came on, 10 gallons.

not bad for a lifted wagon

the carb got worse 'cause i cleaned it, and all the dirt that was clogging the leak came out.
