Why better fuel door on 95 Impr L than on 96 Impr OB?

Recommended Posts

This one is puzzling me. I much prefer an inside-the-car fuel door release lever, and my 1995 Impreza L has one. But my 1996 Impreza Outback has a pull-open fuel door. Whaaaa?

I can't figure out why a more up-line model would have the inferior setup.

Maybe I'll look to retrofit a lever setup sometime in the future when I have lots of spare time. Hah!

Funny, I always considered the pull-release the inferior setup. Anyone looking to steel your gas can open that door in seconds with a screwdriver leaving you with a mess to clean up. Plus you've got a cable that can get pinched or corroded which is it's own batch of problems. Lastly, the release is a plastic knob that interfaces with a metal tab, not a great long-term wear combo. But aesthetically I suppose the cable release is a bit cleaner.

BAJA and BRAT are non pull levers too.

At least the Brat has the round shiny chrome turn knob on it, people are mesmerrized how to get that one open.

True that.

I am starting to hate that stupid little knob in the winter though.

Having to blow on it for 5 minutes to open my gas door then having to blow on

it for another 5 minutes to shut my fuel door is rather frustrating.

Not to mention I have a locking gas cap to deal with, as provided by the previous owner.

I have found that the pull lever gas doors aren't necessarily better, but require

you be more mindful of your car.

Because everybody knows how stupid you feel when you have to run all the

way around your car to pull the stupid gas door lever.

This may be a reason for the simple pull open gas door, as Subaru didn't

want their more wealthy clientele to look like idiots.
