Recommended Posts

Updated - Thanks for the info on pulling the engine forward vice removing trans. It worked like a charm. Once I got the correct clutch kit, it all went in just sweet! (6 hours and 2 beers)

another kudo to the wealth of info on USMB !

Hello all. Need to know how long it takes to replace clutch in 82 Brat. I presume removing front axles, rear driveshaft , remove trans, replace clutch , pressure plate, bearing, and re-install.

Suggestions, tips, time estimate?

thanks in advance, PK

Pull the engine(at least partially) . Its easier, IMO than pulling the trans. How long it will take depends mostly on how good you are with a wrench. I undestand you to be pretty good, so I don't see any reason it should take more than 3 hours.. and thats if you stop for a beer half way through.:D

Thanks guys. one more clarification:

so then I drain radiator, remove radiator/hoses, and pull motor forward enough to replace it that way?

p.s. I dont stop for beer, I wear a two-can hat :D (jk)

Sure, you can do it that way.. I usually pull it all the way out and spin it around so I don't have to be uncomfortable whilst working on it. But just pulling the rad and moving the engine forward will work too... I have done this a couple of times now and I just got fed up with working under the car or cramming my hands into tight places or bending over the side of the car.. Sometimes those things are unavoidable, but I will gladly do a lttle extra work to avoid them when possible.

Oh, one more thing.. Be careful with that hat.. got mine caught on the hood prop rod without realizing it.. Terrible beer headache:D

Again, many thanks gentlemen!

The real biotch is, I sold the Brat over the weekend, and I am supposed to drive it out to the buyer Friday. I just emailed him the news.

(maybe it is destiny - and I am really supposed to keep my Brat, sit inside and apologize for attempting to sell her, and embrace the moment with a group dash hug)

Yeah - you should keep your Brat.

Also - since this is an 82, you have the 200mm clutch stock. Unless it's been upgraded already?? I know what the 200mm is like with big tires..... VERY BAD. The 225mm from 83 and up 4WD's is the one you really want. For that you will need the 83 and up 4WD flywheel tho.... better ask the new owner which one he wants.....

Engine came out forward just great. Got clutch and pressure plate out fine. Its the 7.87" disc

Bought new clutch kit with pressure plate throwout, etc. (Kragen). Clutch is correct. HOWEVER, the pressure plate is wrong??? The original's surface sticks out past its mount toward the flywheel, but the new one does not - it is flush with the mount. So it wont reach the flywheel surface.

I returned it and ordered different part number, same application from PepBros. Is there more than one type pressure plate? I'm thinking maybe they sold me a 1600 kit? Is there difference between 1600 and 1800 kits? :banghead:
