I am changing the fuel filter on my 91 Legacy wagon, and it says I should depressurize the fuel system first by disconnecting the fuel pump and cranking the engine a few times. That's all fine and dandy, but I don't know where the fuel pump or relay is to disconnect. Anyone help?

Thanks!

Disconnect the fuel pump relay. It's in the engine compartment, as far as I know. Run the engine 'til it quits, and then let the starter crank it for five seconds. (This is from the FSM for 2002 Legacy, by the way, so your mileage may vary).

First open the gas cap and leave it open, then lift up the carpet in the back (it will unsnap back by the rear gate) and right behind the back seat on the passenger side you will find a panel with 4 screws. Take it off and unplug the electrical connector, turn the car on and it will run out of gas in just a few seconds. That's it pretty simple. I just did mine a few weeks ago, expect a little gas when you pull the hoses off the filter so have some rags handy. Also be easy on the hoses, they rip fairly easily.

I have a fuel pressure gauge and the fuel system pressure always gets down to zero in about 3 to 4 hours max.

So if you do your repair in the morning there is no residual pressure in the system. So there is a lazy way to do this...;)
