power steering temp? cooler options

I would like to know if it would be OK to use the tranny cooler built into a 2-row radiator as a power steering cooler instead, in a manual car .. Obviously it'd still be running ATF but I'm concerned about the temperature range.. I don't know what temperature the PS usually operates at, but I'd be concerned about it normally running COOLER than the coolant in the radiator, and thus heating up if routed thru the radiator next to the coolant, as opposed to an auxillary cooler..??

I'm thinking that an auxillary cooler would splice in nicely near where the lines enter the crossmember as there's a set of fittings in the line, and then mount the cooler inside the rear of the fender with a grille or something on the fender.. opinions here???

Personally, I wouldn't use the radiator cooler idea. You can mount an aftermarket cooler anywhere there is air-flow, then plumb it into the return to pump line. Easiest that way, as you just use hose and clamps, instead of having to make-up any pressure lines.....Tom

Is it really worth the money spent on the cooler to save the PS pump? I would think you could buy another pump for what the hassle costs.

Still a cool idea though I like seeing some fun ideas on here!

This is a good idea. I had yet to think about this one for the car.

A cooler doesn't cost much... what if the pump goes out 100 miles from nowhere? I'd rather have a happy & cool pump rather than a non working one out in BFE. BUT having a spare/back-up pump is also a good idea, that is... how often do they really go out??

I could steer a PS car without PS for 100 miles if I had to :x

i don't care that much about the pump as much as i care about the rack and pinion. I hate replacing those things when they leak. I will be changing mine soon for that reason. I'll be taking the engine and radiator out of skeet's car and that is the perfect time to get a hard line setup made.

If I make hard lines, I can install the cooler in the high pressure pump-to-RP side of the circuit, and I think that would be better for the RP. Any other ideas regarding that?
