quistions about 1990 subaru loyale EJ18 to EJ22 swap

well my 1.8 is starting to run down, has a crack in the top of the block leeking antifreez, but epoxyed it up pretty much running till it dies, so im getting ready to swap that out for a EJ22 out of a Legacy.

So what are some things that i should know about the swap?

Computer wize, will the EJ22 work of the EJ18 computer or will i have to swap it out for the Legacy computer? Will the wiring thats in my 1990 fit right up with the Legacy computer for the swap?

Motor mount, will i need to buy a conversion kit from a 1990 Loyale to the EJ22, or will it bolt up easy where the EJ18 was? If so anyone know where i could buy one?

 

If there is anything else i should know feel free to let me know, anything helps.

If your car is a Loyale, not a Legacy, It'll have the EA82 1.8l engine, not the EJ18. The computers, wiring, and bellhousings are not compatible with the EJ22. See Numbchux's write up on the EA to EJ swap. It's fairly straightforward but the wiring is a pain.

just in case it's not clear, there are two 1.8 liter engines, that could be confusing you because they are in no way compatiable at all. one is really easy to swap to EJ22 and the other is not.

 

yours being a Loyale it is not an easy swap to an EJ22 - it'll require the write up he mentioend above.

 

as far as a coolant leak - do you want to try to diagnose and repair that?. the most common problem is the intake manifold gaskets leaks as they have water passages in them. if that's the case, that's just a matter of pulling the intake manifold and replacing some gaskets. even something else might have a repair.

Oh okay, and it's the carborated one that are easy, it must be the one a year befor mine 89? I see now.... Hmmm so would it be worth the swap in my loyale? Cost wize? Or should I just rebuild my 1.8 or put a diff 1.8 with no problems. The leek is a crack about 3" long not to pretty, on the top of the block under the manifold. I used ligiud steel on it, didn't work very well, still leeking a little but not as bad as it was. So I'm pretty much done with this motor, unless I pull it and weld it up. The car was free other than the time and little bit of parts I putinto it. Not to bad so far.

honestly i'd probably post a picture of the crack, pull the intake manifold and see if we can figure out a repair. gotta be some way to fill in a coolant leak, it's not under that much pressure or combustion forces. maybe a shop could lay a bead across it if you can't weld aluminum.

 

or CLEAN and fill the crack with some kind of sealant and then put piece of metal on top of it also coated with sealant...gotta be some way to stop a coolant leak.

 

the JB weld and similar stuff sucks. I consider it a last resort now. it's amazing sometimes but for anything cycling, vibrating, moving, hard to clean...it's hard to get it to set or hold up.

 

as for swap question im' not sure what you're asking. are you wanting to do the full on engine wiring, body wiring, ECu swap? that's a big job. for plug and play you'll need another EA82 1.8 liter. (an EJ18 1.8 liter is a completely different motor and won't work...without all the wiring mentioned above).

Sounds like a crack caused by letting water freeze in the cooling jackets from filling the radiator with water instead of coolant. Patching is the right way to go with that, the block is junk at that point so any extra use you get out of it is free miles.

 

Loyales are carry overs from the 80's cars, and the engines and transmissions are EA series designs. In 89, subaru came out with the legacy, which has the EJ series engine and transmission, and there were a whole bunch of changes for the better. They kept selling the previous design loyale's until they replaced it with the impreza in 93. The loyales were obsolete at the time they were being sold, but were a low price alternative to the Legacy, so they filled that market niche until they could get the Impreza to market.

91loyale, yeah it was from a couple freezes thats why its so bad, the crack is pretty much from the top center of the block where the tranny mounts to just under the manifold. (its hard to take a picture of it in that area, its pretty much my every day driver right now) i got the car from my uncal, he was replaceing the waterpump about 5 years back and got lazy didnt finish it left it all exposed and became one of thouse portland bikers... so it sat with water in it for 5 years, then i got ahold of it fixed what i could, took me a couple months to fix it and to get it to where i am now. i agree with you, it is toast, thats why im looking at diffrent options in motors to swap out, either keep the same type of motor running in there or go to something with a little more power like the ej22? and deal with the huge job of wiring and swaping...

ive read most of the wright up for the ej22 swap. Is the year of my car compaired to others going to make a diffrence in what i need (parts) for the swap? pretyy much, what do i need to make this EA82 to a EJ22 possible?

 

Does any one know where i could buy the wiring already moded for my loyale ready to put in? and how much? im not a big fan of wiring stuff up, but if i have to i will.

 

im not swapping out the tranny, i like my 5speed push button4x4, good on mpg. so i will need an addapter plate.

read through the swap manual and ask specific questions.

 

i'd keep your transmission too, i'm a fan of the old school "locked" 4WD models and they're very reliable.

 

yes - he's a member here and very well respected. if i were doing a swap that's exactly how i'd do it.

hey man i swapped a SOHC 2.5L out of a 02 impreza into my 92 subaru loyale. the mechanical part of the swap is fairly straight forward with the adapter plate, and xt6 clutch kit, and all of the parts to fit the engine to the loyale drivetrain. The hard part of the swap is the wiring. what you get from knumbchux i belive, is the harness you supply modifiied and cut down to the engine controls only and re-loomed for fittament to your car and labeled of course. but you cant forget that you will have to Run and and connect the wiring your self, find the pin-out for the new ecu and your existing loyale ecu, match the wires and find the proper ways to make your, tach, speedo, temp, oil pressure, etc. work! its a pain and to do it the right way will cost a pretty penny, but if your serious about your loyale swap and wana have somehthing to keep and have as reliable i would highly reccomend doing research or taking to a SUBARU SHOP.

 

ill post a pic soon for you so you can see mine. i am very happy with it.

basically you will be taking out the stock engine control wiring and the ecu from the 1.8 spfi loyale and be replacing it with the wiring and ecu from the donor car. so you will only be using the ecu from the ej series engine not the loyale's stock one.

 

 

All said and done with paying 700.00 for the car a year ago i have about 3,500 into it with all the custom wiring, wich i had a guy here in town do for me ;) Adam at NWRS, the ea to ej adapter plate, XT6 clutch kit, oil pressure plate adapter, gauges, and the list goes on. Its not cheap to do the right way but when its done and everything works and its reliable, you cant put a price on that.

 

and thats why i love my ************in subaru............hell yeah :banana:

haha awesome and good to know thanks!! im not going to end up spending that much though. im more of a do it yourself kinda guy, i figure i can get a motor from the junk yard for a 100$, wiring 200$ from nux, ecu junk yard too couple bux, the addaptor plate ill prolly make my self if i can find the dimensions for one, seems pretty easy maby 40$ for the metal. also do an over haul on the ej22 motor depending on how many miles is on it, dont want it craping out on me couple miles up the MOUNTAIN, after getting it in there. clutch kit 200$. other random crap another 100.

 

im cheap, so the junk yard is my best freind! pretty much the only reason why my subaru is still running. :banana:

 

once i start with the swap this summer, (or when my motor goes out) ill load some pix up and show off my ride :lol:

You figure wrong. A good, known running, even high mileage 2.2 will cost more like 300-500 at least.

 

Yard here charges me $100 for an ECU and Harness. Though they ussually have been cut and hacked, so you kinda have to find a car that just came in. Even then, you don't know if it all still works.

 

Do yourself a favor. Buy a beat up Legacy that at least runs and use all the parts from the same car.

 

You'll end up doing things 5 times over, the hard way trying to go the J-yard route.

Gloyale is right a used 2.2 or even 2.5 with wiring and ecu is gona cost you a pretty penny about 400.00 on the cheap side to a 1000,00 bucks or more depending on what you need. my clutch kit was 250.00 from parts train and it didn't come with throwout bearing clips, there 4 bucks a piece but you have to get them from the dealership. Then you have the ea to ej adapter plate thats 400.00 plus tax from scott at sjr lift etc, etc. trust me your gona put a few bucks into it just to mate the engine and get it running.

 

 

i would get a car that runs like Gloyale said and use that as a donor so you know you have everything you need as far as wiring sensors, etc off the donor car.

 

i bought pretty much everything brand new so my ************s legit.

yeah that is true buying a junked legacy would be a good idea, but im pretty sure the last time i was at my yard, motors are only 110$, it may have gon though... and the price for the clutch was off another one of these forms, and yours is also a 2.5, all the prices were about what it cost lol. i was just on the sjr lifts yusterday and the addaptor plate was only 185, the one that was 400 was the one with the readrilled flywheel too, i have a buddy thatd do that for free. :grin: and its not that hard to make the add plate, but ill prolly end up buying it from them.

 

when you wire the ej22 harness in, does it get wired into here the only ea wiring goes into the ecu? so if i got a feemale addaptor to it i could just plug it in insted of cutting wires and dubbing in?

basically pwra101 your gona run the modified wiring harness that you get back from numchux through the firewall to the engine. the connections to the ecu wont change because ur using the wiring that came from the donor car and ecu. the plugs for the ecu wont change. your gona have to modifiy some wiring and hook up stuff alternit ways like oil pressure, etc.

 

SO BASICALLY UR RUNNING DIFFRENT ENGINE CONTROL WIRING AND HAVING THE ECU RUN THE ENGINE. U WONT NEED UR OLD ECU!!!

 

I would advise doing some in depth research or asking a wiring specialist or subaru mechanic.

 

the xt6 clutch is the best you can do with an ea82 drive train, doesn't matter what size engine if your gona run ea 82 drive train the xt6 pressure plate has the highest clamping force for an ea82 drivetrain. and you can make an adapter plate and redrilled flywheel but if you mess up or ur holes on the flywheel and if you are off or if your adapter plate is any more or less than 1/2 thick or not perfectly flat ur project is gona probley ************ up! its a delicate and percise process. there is a right and wrong way to do it and trust me i put a few bucks into mine so unless ur willing to lose money do it the right way!!!
