While waiting for parts, I made some parts!! (MORE pics)

Recommended Posts

So,

I'm rebuilding this EA82T and got to a point where I ran out of things to do until some parts arrived. The first project was a lightened crank pulley. Check it out here

I used 6061-T6 billet and my wee little South Bend metal lathe. The stock pulley weighs over 3lb12oz. Mine weighs 12oz. It could likely be made quite a bit lighter as I went pretty conservative on thickness and didn't drill anything out.

As you can see I also ditched the AC and PS so I need only one belt.

Super Non AC alt bracket photo up now

I thought about doing that too. We have two lathes, both WW2 era, and they both just have the tinyest amount of shake in them right now. One I know is bearings, but I can't figure out what the other one is yet.

Nice work :D

Thanks for the Props guys.

I had thought about the potential that others would want these things. If I made them 1 at a time they would be expensive. I was thinking about talking with some CNC machine shops to get some bids for small runs (10 or so at a time). I'll keep people posted.

I thought the pulleys that Perrin and others maks for the Impreza were overpriced but after making this first pulley, That seems like a good deal.

Perrin claims the pulley they make removes the equivalent of 100lbs of static weight from a car. Interesting, I don't really understand physics well enough but I do understand revs.

I will look into having pulleys CNC machined. Do any of you have spares you'd like to donate to the project. I need EA81 pulleys (how many variations are there, just 1 and 2 belt?)

I think water pump, alt, and ps pulleys woould be cool too but mostly for the bling factor. Theres not that much weight to them

Yes, Caboobaroo, I am interested to. I will be documenting the install of the EA82T into the Gen 1 and will keep everyone posted on its progress. Hope to have all the bugs worked out for the WCSS in august.

Were is 78turbobrat? haven't heard from him for quite a while

Note: I have pictures of my Non-AC alt bracket up now as well as some other stuff, actually a photo of the EA82T fit into the Brat engine bay, very tight. I sure don't want to have to do headgaskets or deal with HLAs after I get it in there

Garner that is an outstanding job on the pulley. For others out there I took the double pulley off my Brat and took it to work, on the digital scales it figured out to be 38oz. I believe. The maintaince shop cut the AC belt pulley off the front and drilled about 8 lightening holes around it, it weighs 18oz. now. Removed the working AC because it caused such a drag on the engine when I used it plus converting to the Weber it would drop the normal idle to low. It seemed to really free the little motor up alot. Just for those that might be interested Ram Performance makes an EA81 alloy under drive pulley for about $100. I personally like the standard size in a pulley better.

GARNER,

That new pulley sure does look sharp. It's about time that someone did something like this. Frankly, I'm surprised that I haven't seen it already. If you do end up making pulleys, or having them made, you'll definitely have your hands full supplying the demand of us lunatics here on the board.

I never really stopped to take a look at it because of my stupid dial up connection. *sigh*

I feel your pain. Only i suffer even more. I live in a small "suburb" (although suburbs don't exist anywhere in Wyoming) north of town. The lines are so sh!tty that i can't connect any faster than 28.8. On top of that, i use AOL. I realize that AOL is horrible-slow, but i'm still getting it for free. Can't beat that.

that's a 72 honda 200T with moss growing on the seat. I just got a replacement title so it may hit the road again soon. I love old honda motorcycles.

Oddcomp,

I was thinking of that, or making a slightly smaller alt pulley?

I'll need to examine the EA81 pulleys, The only one I have is a single belt and it isn't too heavy, replacing it aluminum might be mostly for bling-factor.

I have contacted some CNC shops and should get some ballpark numbers on EA82 single and double pulleys soon.

Ah, but you don't have the view out your front window that I do. And I don't suffer the obnoxious overcrowding and noise pollution of the city.

To me, it's a good trade-off. I've lived in urbia -- it's not for me.

I may be able to get DSL soon. Cable runs by my door, but is just a few feet too far away to easily connect (they have a 50' limit for overhead).

I make do, with efficient multitasking, excellent cron jobs, and multiple computers.
