My new project eg33 swapped 81 westy.

Recommended Posts

I will be starting a new project in a few days. I am picking up an 1981 aircooled westy and will be swapping a EG33 or a 2000 EJ25 into it. I am fairly knowledgeable of subys and swapping EJ's and EG's into different platforms.

I currently have an EG33 swapped 1995 legacy that I run for rally-X.

But the body is toast and I need a new home for that sweet six. I found the van locally and it is great shape, has a blown wasser in it but the rest of the van is solid enough for an east coast canadian van.

I plan on buying the bellhousing, but would like to build the rest myself. Anyone have any pics of homemade mounts/brackets/headers for an EJ or EG swap.

I should have the van in the yard in the next little bit, pics to follow.

Cheers,

Ian

I happen to have a spare complete EG33 in the garage as well as the one in the rally car running.

Since the 81 was originally an aircooled van there is less space then the newer water cooled versions.

I plan on reversing the intake manifold/coolant manifold and relocating the alternator. I can mock all this up on the spare EG33 and will test it in the legacy to make sure it runs right before pulling the motor from the rally-x car.

I am going to run the KEP adapter plate and build my own engine mount using the original subaru crossmember and some fab work.

I am going to run a front mount radiator with dual fans, probably a OEM vanagon setup. And no heater core, at least right away.

Today I will start testing the revesed intake setup and mocking up the alternator relocation.
