best oil , weight?

Recommended Posts

 hi all. I personally would not use 20/50 in a 4 pop. Heavier oil decreaces Hp, and it does not lubricate any better. 10/30 10/40 is fine all year, if it gets really cold 5/30 in winter is OK for normal driving. My choice in oil is Castrol.:burnout:

Good/tight engine (except Turbo): 10W30

Good/tight engine (Turbo): 15W40

Loose/used/worn engine (any): 20W50

Thrasher/beater/smokescreener: SAE30 or worse

Main thing is: keep it clean. Don't "push" the mileage, change it often.

(My '93 owners manual has 5W30 listed as an option, but only up to about 40°F. IOW, winter only, for the 48 States).

Brand opinion: like armpits, everyone's got a couple. Keep it clean, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference (but I run Mobil 1 today, FWIW).

:wave:HI About 2 or 3 years ago I read an artical about oil weight. the then new model H***a was out and required 5w/20 and question were being asked about the oil weight. I was also woorking at a oil change shop and had to inform custumers that we did not carry the oil for there H***a car and to take it to the dealer for there oil change. the atical stated that the new engines were of very tight tolerances and using a heavyer oil could cause leakage past the seals. In a high millage american V8 like my 88 plymouth fury cop car 378000 miles 20w/50 our 207000 mile 90 legacy 10w/30 or 10w/40. :burnout:

I run 15w40 Napa Fleet Oil (comes in the gallon jugs)

and 4 to 8 oz of Marvels Mystery Oil. I change oil/filter every 2k miles.

Havent had an oil pressure problem or bad ticking since the change over last year..

I expiremented with 10w30 this winter and maybe even 5w30 for one oil change and my car did not like it.

From what I've seen, Mobil 1 synthetic is the best oil, but you shouldn't switch to a synthetic unless your engine has recently been rebuilt or resealed, otherwise it will 1: leak and 2: the higher detergent properties will loosen up nasty crap that has found it's place over the years, possibly with ill effects.

I just rebuilt my engine (less than 200 miles on it), and I'm breaking it in on the best dino oil I know of, which is Castrol GTX. After the first change at like 300 miles to get any crap out of the engine and the first real oil change at 3000, I'm switching over to Mobil 1 10w30. My other engine was run to its deathbed on that stuff (had really bad rings) and I'm convinced that I wouldn't have made it that far with any other oil (except maybe 15w40 diesel oil).

For your brat, I would go with Castrol GTX 10w40, or if you're worried about oil pressure, go with 15w40 or 20w50.
