Recommended Posts

I just messed my self, watching this video...

I know I'm quoting a really old post ;) but I just have to say. . . .

Hell's is a pretty sweet trail!!  Its one my buddy (black FJ80...you've seen pix before and chatted with him on other forums) and I would do as an out when our kids were under 2...good rocking to sleep trail

Anyhoo, I just wanted to drop this in here, in memory of Hell's

Its not the great videography, sound editing or gnar of the trail, but . .. its a subaru sedan out there! ;)

Your cruiser is coming along amazingly Tom, mad props to your attention to detail AGAIN!  B)

^ NICE!!

wait, open diffs?

Wut the hell?!!  Get that thing locked up!!

Cruisers have some sweet locking systems (not that i know the specifics)!

My buddy's 96 (you've seen pix) has the awesome factory set-up.  Anyhoo, I'm sure you know what you need/would like, and I'm sure a major part of it i$...

ciao, gunna check out the video now!

Yeah the Factory E-lockers are nice. Those only came as an option '93-97 FJ80s. 1991/92 did not have lockers as an option in America. But then again, the 3F-E was available as a motor in these over seas, most were Diesel or the 4.5 Turbo. America got the 4.5 Straight-6 (1FZ-FE) in '93-'97 but were prone for HG failure.

The 3F-E seems to be a pretty solid bullet proof engine and is indeed better without all the Emissions gunk on it. The big thing people do is swap in the Cummins 4BT in place of either the 3F-E or 1FZ-FE. I'm told some GM transmission will need to be used with this conversion, but I wouldn't mind the 4BT in mine. More power and more torque.

Again, back to Lockers. Yes I really want locking axles for mine. But it is pretty spendy to get locking axles unless you can buy a Locked truck on the cheap and rebuild the axles. The axle cases in the'91-'92 are actually a little different were the Pinion is and lockers can not be swapped into them. Non locked axles from a '93 can have locking diffs swapped in as the case is already designed for it.

So thats my understanding on everything Lol :P

Cool, looks like you had a fun day. I miss mine, kinda, sometimes lol… I DON'T miss the MPG. Also as far as the 4BT swap goes, you can use the stock trans in a 91/92, because its a full mechanical, hydraulically controlled trans. In the 93-97 they have a TCU and you either need to swap to another trans, or get a piggyback TCU and program it etc. I still believe the 91/92 is the way to go, even without the locker option. That 3FE engine is bulletproof even if it can't get out of it's own way, downhill, with a tailwind… I will probably own another FJ80 at some point, it is for sure a sweet rig. I convinced myself if I go that route again I am just going to buy one that is DONE, diesel, lockers, armor, racks, air etc etc. It will be worth the coin if I get serious.

Keep up the updates!!

Oh! Thats a good piece of advice. I didn't know you could still use the A440F with the 4BT. I will actually have to find a swap writeup on ih8mud and see what the details are, I was told the 4BT is pretty much mechanical, so there really isn't any wiring harness to deal with.

Anyway, yeah the MPG is always fun when standing at the pump, and since I need to run premium to keep it from pinging so much, it sometimes get spendy. I took the Loyale to the gas station a couple days ago, and $17 filled it, with premium. Our Low grade 87 is under $3 right now, so Premium is under $4!

So I ordered both new O.E fit Cat pipes (Comes from the Manifold to the joining mid-pipe) I needed to buy new pipes, just for the fact of replacing the Oxygen Sensors (Studs and flanges are rusted something fierce) Anyway, when I get those, I am going to cut the cats off, and just put tubing in its place. No more cats, since desmoggling this beast.

I also ordered both new Denso O2 Sensors. Got everything off Rockauto for about $350. Hoping after this, I won't hear any more hissing from the pin-hold welds on the cats.

Removed the battery box and cleaned up some grounds today. I'm gonna add another ground soon, From batt to either engine, or engine bay. Figured, I better start putting some love into this beast before winter.

Need to grab another case of Amsoil Signature 10w30 soon as well as a Amsoil extended service filter.

I am also going to replace the hose clamps on the air intake, with constant torque or T-bolt clamps. Probably Mishimoto.
