When did Subaru engines become interference engines?

I've owned Subarus since the 70's, but I have always stuck to the older models (never had one newer than a 94).

I have had many timing belts break on me, and other than a towing bill and replacement belts, I've never had any type of engine damage. Which is why I love Subarus, and absolutely detest interference engines.

So my question is; When did Subaru engines become interference engines?

I just want to know, so that I can stay away from them in the future.

The search function here works pretty well and this topic has been covered many times.

I believe the concensus is all 2.5's and 2.2 starting in about 97. I think folks say that the 96/97 you can tell by the angle of the spark plugs which are interference.

But if you search you will find more difinitive info.

the ea81 is an interference engine, but since it uses a timing gear that rarely fails, it doesn't usually cause any problems....

If serviced properly, the interferance engines don't have problems with broken belts. It's almost unheard of. Your fear is unfounded.

properly serviced it's not an issue. spend the extra coin in a complete timing kit (belt, pulleys, and tensioner).

all EJ25's are interference. 1996+
EJ18's were never interference. offered until around 97 or 98.
EJ22's are interference around 1997 and up but i've seen conflicting information on that.

EA82, EA82T, and ER27's of the late 80's and early 90's are not interference. these are found in older generation stuff, XT6's, loyale's, GL's, etc.
