85 gl station wagon-no pick power

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone out there know why a car would not have any type of pick up? Even when tuned it runs okay for a while then goes back to bucking instead of going into gear and making a high-pitched whistling sound, especially upon shifting gears. The wagon runs so poorly that it feels like an absolute chore to drive it. The catalytic converter has also been changed. Any suggestions would be great.

thats a bit tricky from your description. I assume its a carb motor?

the whistle may be a vacume leak? mabey at the brake booster.

This is a automatic transmission?

I am not to familiar with the sube automatics but there are some common problems with them. is this what you are refering to?

try to be a little more specific if you can.

No, it is not an automatic transmission. It is a 5-speed stick shift. Some one once said that it could be the carburetor that is the problem. How about the fuel injector? Would another tune up and a fuel injector cleaning help if the carburetor? Also is that whistling sound at any way related to the actual pick up if it is a vacuum leak? I do not know much about a Subaru. I owned a Nissan pick up truck for almost 19 years and finally sold it last year.

there are no fuel injectors if its carburated. fuel system cleaning will probably not do you any good.

when you are talking about pick up do you mean acceleration?

if so yes it may affect it.

sound sike you need a qualified mechanic to look at it. dont go to the dealer or jiffy lube type places they dont do what you need done.

where is redlands? mabey someone local can help you find a good shop.

Hi,

Yes, I mean no pick up on acceleration. So, if the engine has a carbuertor, it does not have a fuel injector? Oh, boy, I am learning!!! Okay, so suggestions here are another tune up, change of fuel filter and overall check on vacuum lines? You are not kidding, I need to find a good, patient mechanic. This poor mechanic will either hate to see me or smile because he will be taking a vacation sooner than planned on the amount of money I could be spend on this car!! Anyhow, Redlands is in the Inland Empire between San Bernardino and Riverside California. Oh, yes, another question. I have heard that this particular model is not a real speed demon anyway. Is this true? I do not need a speed demon and am not expecting this, just one that acelerates on the freeway.

1. shift at 4,000+rpm

2. IF you ned to accelerate quickly, drive it in LO, then at 55-60mph, shift to fwd, works better because of the "closer" ratios and 4th and 5th do NOT act as over drive :brow:

remove emissions controls, I have posted my how2, search for egr remove

3. good tune-up including proper spec ohm plug wires, ngk plugs, .045-.05 gap, accel 8140C coil, cap, rotor, filters, change oil, mmo down carb

4. 8* timing advance with vac. line disconnected and plugged

EDIT: connect dist advance directly to intake manifold

2" exhaust with glasspack at end, more searching, good luck
