fixing (hopefully) the 4sd tomarrow -> thoughts

Finally getn round to tearing into the 4spd i got in the brat.....has no reverse.....Has anyone done this and if so are there any pointers that would be helpfull......also ive heard some things about a easy fix for the reverse problem (sticking in gear and clashing) anyone know anything about that...........

 

Well i will keep ya all up to date on the progress and maybe get some pics....

They are not simple inside - get an FSM if you don't have one, as they aren't even easy to get apart. You'll need the procedure on it. I'm working on one right now - I'm just stuck at the moment cause I don't have the right socket to remove the "extension housing drive gear" in order to remove the transfer case....

well i riped er apart today and it wasnt even as hard as expected BUT you do need a 34 mm thin wall socket (not an impact socket)

 

And what i found was beyond belief.....My reverse idler gear was completly gone, bout 4 teeth left.....Also i was missing a tooth off the the drive pinion.....and lastly im missing the three sincro keys for the 1-2 sincro...the instructer pretty much told me he was amazed that it still drove.....

 

Lastly some info for people going to crack there tranny open. make sure you know where all the springs, ballbearings, and sprag bearings are in the transfercase. thats the only thing were there is a bunch of little peices.

 

BTW i have access to numerious programs (mitchel transmissions and alldata) if anyone needs any info on it.......
