96 2.2 in a trike

you will want to look in australia where carb models were available for the intake and carb. some sort of ford escort disty will work.

 

was this originally a turbo(wrx) and are you using a turbo?

 

for the time and effort of sourcing a factory carb from overseas, someone might just have a cut down harness to use for your engine.

 

I understand the preference for a carb in a motorcycle for simplicity all around.

 

if you are dealing with an engine importer, see what they may get from australia. Othyerwise check the aussie based subaru forums

I am getting the motor from a junk yard and some one has been working on the computer so i think there is a problem there. Can get it real cheap but need to know for sure i can make it run. I have heard about the dist but would like to here from some one that has done it

90 through 95 2.2's have the slot in the passenger side cam to run a distributor. '96 and up do not as they have roller rocker cams and no slot was provided. You could change out the cam and rockers for 90 to 95 units and it would work fine. Or possibly have the slot milled into the back of the existing cam.... it could be done but I would just find a cam with one already.

 

You could also wire up the MPFI - just get a harness and computer from another 95 to 98 2.2 or 2.5 and that will run it.

Would like to keep it fuel enjected but not sure if that is possible . IT will be in a trike and not sure what parts to get from car just to make it run. how much of the relays and sencers can go away and still run right. I am a fuel injection virgin but would really like to do this.

Actually for the engine to *just run* - once the harness is stripped to only the ECU and associated wireing - you only need to make 4 connections. Constant power, switched power, start signal (only hot while cranking - to the starter solenoid), and fuel pump power.

 

The ECU would like to also have a few more inputs - it would like to know if the vehicle is in gear or neutral (a switch that grounds when in-gear or when the clutch is released), and it would like a speed sensor signal. This is a square wave generated either by the speedo head or by a wheel or driveline sensor similar to what is used for cruise control systems.

 

Otherwise all the sensors for the engine are mounted on the engine intake manifold with the exception of the O2 sensor which is mounted in the exhaust, the MAF which is right after the air-filter in your intake duct, and - depending on the year - possible some MAP sensors that are on the fenderwall of the donor car and connected to the engine with a vacuum line.

 

When the harness is stripped you keep all the connectors for the engine and it's sensors as well as the ECU, fuel pump, and ignition relays under the dash.

 

There are a couple board members including myself that offer harness stripping services to remove all the uneccesary portions of the harness and label all the connections that you will use. I charge $200 plus shipping for the OBD-II harnesses like the '96 you found.
