does anyone know what this might be??

Hello,

Got my motor apart..... cleaning it up.....

pulled the camshaft seals.... I was very surprised

that they weren't leaking............... It may be because

of this sealant that was used on the o-rings

(for sealing housing to camblock connection.)...

So this sealant is what I am wondering about.........

I will describe it..... I have never seen anything like it

before.... I would like to get some......

it was red..... dries hard...... light can pass through it...

thus, creating a nice red color... like that of say a red cough drop

when the light passes through it...... or we could even say

some red axle bearing grease when the light passes through it...

I hope that is enough of a description....

Oh, one of the cam blocks there wasn't even an o-ring....

just the red stuff...... dried hard made a good seal.....

came off in several large pieces resembling that of an o-ring...

So like this gm gasket sealer is good schtuff!

I there a place to buy it where I don't have to

walk into a GM parts dept.. at a dealership????

Anywhere on line perhaps.

WHat does "anerobic sealer", mean?

I am regasketing this EA82...... and I want to

be sure She seals up the best possibly.......

I got the heads milled and the intake milled......

So what kind of spooge(sealant) can I use

to get the best seal on this pup.....

Permatex anaerobic gasket maker:

.2 fl oz tube - $3.29 - NAPA# 765-2433

1.69 fl oz tube - $13.49 - NAPA# 765-1189

 

I wouldn't advise using ANYTHING on head gaskets to my customers - anybody out there have a different experience with Sub heads?

Thanks for all the tips.....

I ask of you all one more thing.....

I come from the land of castiron engines...

and using "locktite"-blue for threads on bolts.........

What can I use on the threads of bolts with aluminium

engines???????

Due to the soft nature of aluminium I see locktite being

a bad thing to use...............

the only place on the soob motor that i would see appropriate for thread locker would be the timing bely idler pulley on the driver side, and the exhaust studs

 

DO NOT use gasket sealer on a soob, cause the gaskets are graphite faced to allow for different expansion rates

Well, that is good information.......

As for the bolts....... not using threadlocker...........

How about using the permatex aviation sealer on the

bolts......

IE: headgasket bolts, cambox bolts, waterpump bolts

and the intake bolts.....

 

what are people using on the bolts

as a sealer???????????

 

you know from anti-freeze or oil running up the threads

and then leaking out at the head of the bolt...........

subarus dont have that kinf of issue. they dont run the bolts into water jackets or oil passages like some other cars do. and if you do fide a situation like that. once again the aviation sealant is recomended for use on threads too.

 

no sealant on the HG is true. there is only one sealant that I have heard of for HG use and that is copper coat. but I agree with dry instal.

 

like miles mentioned the ultra grey is good for the case halfs and cam boxes along with some other uses.

got some of that aviation sealant

just picked it up today..........

I'll use that on the threads........

How about the o-rings??????

do you use anything on o-rings?????

and for that matter...... the mickey mouse seal??????

 

and the camcover gaskets/rubbers......

do you install the camcovers dry or use the

aviation sealant on them as well????????
