solid axle tech?

on my 81 hatchback offroader I began having problems with breaking rear axles after I installed a divorced nissan transfercase and 31" tires.I may have fixed that issue by using legacy inner DOJ's at each end so this post may be worthless only time will tell.However I just swapped in a ej22 so i might be back to blowing axles.The thing is I was blowing the old axles and I wasn't even on the throttle.Ie crawling up a hill in low gear idling...If I can't figure something out I will swap in a solid rear axle.I am just wondering if there would be any sort of practical difference between a toyota 8" and a nissan H190 or C200 in 4.11.Ive heard any of those axles can take 35"s,I would just be running 31"s under a hatch...would any of those axles be lighter,have better ground clearance,easier to convert to disk brakes,etc?

make a hybread axle use the loyale ends on the gl shaft will give you longer axle cups that dont limit out as easy had to do thiss with buggy it likes to shear axles i like that its a fuse and is easy to replace i carry two spare axles to evry race but is best part to break better than diff or drive shaft and it consistaly breaks there so i know where the problem is it was a bitt better when i softend up my posi in back now only breaks when doing dounuts in tight circles

how noticeable would the loss of 3" of ground clearance be under the diff?Right now my rear diff is 12" from the ground,A toyota axle with the same size tires looks to have about 9" under the diff.3" may not seem like much but right now if I go through a rut thats bigger than my diff the tires will extend down and continue to grab traction even if the diff is sitting on the ground. with a solid axle as soon as the ruts get high enough that the diff is the ground thats pretty much it.Your stuck unless the front can still get enough traction to move you.or is there not that much of a difference?

check out an xtera reared. I don't know about fit, but I know that people who have the C200 swap rear ends to the m226 from the xtera/frontier/titans (2005-2010, or thereabouts). they made a factory e-locker for them, so people replace the reared rather than buy the expensive lockers that fit in the nissans. Just make sure you get the control unit that goes with it, supposed to wire in easy though i haven't done it.

 

if your going to hunt yards for the c200 or somethings similar, you may as well get the locker if you can.

 

Id look at the toyo if you want a selection of parts, theres not a ton of options for the nissan stuff, though they are both plenty stout.

You will notice it. My tacoma sucks in sloppy mud or deep snow because it gets hung up. I've got 31's on it. I've had to use my subaru to drag the truck around to get it out before. I could drive the wagon around the truck breaking fresh tracks vs the truck being in established packed ruts and stuck. The wagon only had 29's on it. I've also had the wagon up trails that a fullsize 80's chevy couldn't make it up because their diffs were plowing a trench in the middle of the two ruts.

 

That said, a solid axle is a lot stronger than the ifs and you can get better articulation out of them.

i just bought an 82 rx7 with a lsd solid axle rear end with 3.9 ratio,disk brakes and rear ebrake and i saw on ebay 3.70,4.11 gear sets for this axle.

 

i bet it wouldnt be that hard to put in....:brow:
