Just got a VW New Beetle for my wife. It is a TDI turbo diesel with lots of torque! And not only that, the clutch does not shudder and the cruise sets right on with no special technique required. Further, it has three, that is THREE standard power outlets that are HOT ALL THE TIME. Speedo reads fast about 6 percent. This has to do with Subaru in that they should be able to do as well or better since they are a smaller company and should be able to FIX STUFF that ain't right quicker. Do not get me wrong: I still think the Baja and the other models are the cat's a-- and will probably get another Sube when this one wears out.

Good Luck!

I've had several friends (5) that bought Brand New VW's in the past two years and only one still has their car. All the other's traded them in for a car from Japan. VW has been having some serious quality issues in the past few years. Good news is the only person I know that has kept there car has a Jetta TDI. The TDI seems to be the best of the bunch, so good luck and I hope you don't have any trouble. None of this is to say that SUBARU is perferct or doesn't have any problems, but it just seems that from what I've seen through friends VW hasnt been to great lately.

No one seems to deliver the same quality anymore. I ain't just talking about "They don't make 'em like they used to" nostalgia, either.

I expect that the consumers are to blame, at least over on this side of the pond, since we have become obessed with low price goods. People just don't want to pay for quality anymore - but then they still expect to get it!

VW's look great, have very tasty interiors but the money spent here has been saved on engineering the oily bits underneath. It's a question of percieved quality. The sound of a Mercedes door shutting has been carefully engineered to to sound just-so. Nevermind that the real quality has gone down the drain.

I would agree with the quality thing. It's totally gone downhill. Cars today look nice, ride nice, and in many cases run pretty good. My old soobs often make strange noises, are a bit dinged up, and require a bit of moral support sometimes, but in comparison to new cars, what really counts is a lot more solid. My cars have never let me down. Ever. Try to get that from a car made in the last few years, especially if it's got the kind of mileage on it that my cars do, and you will be disappointed.

The 1.9 diesel has more torque than the 2.0 gas at any RPM. I've heard they feel much more peppy in everyday driving as well as getting the kind of MPG Volkswagens were once famous for. 700 miles on a tankful was the number I always heard and I could definitely get used to that on a car! The two things I have always heard on the new beetles was that there were a lot of electrical problems like on all the other german cars. Not the big stuff, just lots of little switches and stuff. My Ford dealer is a Volkswagen dealer and they once told me they had to replace the radio in every one they had sold! The other thing is they have replaced lots of rear axle assemblys on them and golfs and jettas. What happens there is if you back into a curb, the axle bends and the fix is to replace the entire axle assembly. That should be pretty easy to avoid, especially knowing it could be a problem

People always rotate from brand to brand. Thousands of people per day swear they'll never buy another Subaru, yet over on the VW boards, the same number of people swear they'll never own another VW and that they'll go back to owning Japaneese cars. Doesn't mean much really. People have to drive something.

For the most part, the new VW's are POS's. Electrical gremlins, shoddy hardware and poor dealer service. Their "design it in Germany, but assemble it in Mexico" philosophy has been a complete failure.

I've found that Toyota is about the best overall.

Thanx, guys. I knew I would hear what was needed, not wanted. Hey! SHE wanted the damn thing! What you have all said does not surprise me in the least. The "Assembled in Mexico" has always had serious drawbacks for any manufacturer in terms of QC. I think my point was that some of the features that exist on the VW as standard simply are not even considered at Subaru and THEY ARE UNRESPONSIVE TO CUSTOMER SUGGESTIONS! I figured that maybe they read this excellent board and take heart to what is said. I might also be dreaming. I am on the VW board and have seen several posts that indicate some owners are PAST owners and intend to stay that way once the particular VW is gone.

Snotrocket, thanks for the heads up! "Coolant migration" for the rest of the gang does not affect Subaru since the coolant overflow tank is not pressurized as it is in the VW TDI systems. The overflow tank starts to leak at an electrical connector on the tank and the green stuff "migrates" up the ELECTRICAL HARNESS to the speedo and the computer....creating all sorts of electrical gremlins!
