After beating my head against the wall (forcefully I might add) I have finally finished rebuilding a 99 (Phase 2) EJ22 for a customer. Along the past month and a half, I have discovered some differences that I'd like to compile on here, along with submissions from other engines so people can have a single resource to find intel on these engines.

In other words, let my struggles be of some help to others.

To start:

1999 Subaru Impreza 2.2:

Uses different piston rings than previous EJ22s. 1.2/1.2/2.5 as opposed to the standard of 1.2/1.5/3.0 for the ring width. See; Hastings 2C5167. I got mine from RetroRoo (ShawnW)

Timing belt tooth count is +3 over standard phase 1 EJ22: 47 passenger cam to crank, 43.5 crank to driver cam. Standard is 44/40.5.

Uses SOHC 2.5 valve cover and intake manifold gaskets.

Uses hotter plug (OEM spec) than earlier EJ22: BKR5E11 NGK

1995:  Dual port exhaust manifold

1996-2001:  Single port exhaust manifold

Timing Tensioner:

1990-1996 has old style tensioner

1997 is usually new style tensioner in the ones I've seen.

1998+ is new style tensioner

1995:  Automatics have EGR, manuals do not

1996-1998:  EGR is variable, I've seen auto EJ22's with and without EGR

1999-2001 Phase II's are very different from Phase I EJ22's.

Could possibly list the few things that are the same amongst Phase I and Phase II EJ22s:

Oil pump, water pump, timing pulleys, timing tensioner
