Zefy
i am very confused so any help would be great... ok so when when we are driving down the road in my dads manual tranny 01 legasy wagon it make a sqeaky noise from the back of the car... it only happens when i am accelerating in any gear and only if i am really putting on the gas... not if i am just slowly accelerating... like when i was driving to whistler in the sea-to-ski highway i am stuck behind a dink in a civic who drives really slow in the turns but when the straights open up with passing lanes he/she floors making it hard to pass so i floor it even more and cruse on passed him/her... but it also happens when i am stopped at a light and speed up fast to get up to speed... ok so now i have told my story i will give you a little background on exactly what happens... so it doesn't matter what gear i am in and only happens when i accelerate... as soon aas i shift out of that gear it stops... rpms don't seam to matter because it usually happens from 2500 to 5500rpm... i don't ussually bring it up to 5500rpm but i was testing to see when the sqeak would happen... my dad thinks it has to do with torque but i have no idea... i don't know if this matters but it has 115k km on it and the clutch is going(me and my bro learned to drive on it so the clutch didn't last as long as it normally would) nothing actually happens (ie. a clunk, grinding, rattleing) just a sqeak... has anybody else had a similar problem? thanks all,

wlr
Zefy Any luck with this? My 2000 Legacy Outback has been doing this for a month or so. I think it might be a lose fan belt but am not quite sure. It only happens when I have the accelerator to the floor. I thought the sound was coming from the back, but now think it might be coming from the engine compartment. w

Zefy
i posted this like a year ago... and the car is still doing it... it doesn't do anything to the car and i haven't noticed any difference in performance... so if you want the car then buy it... the sqeak does nothing and i actually use it sometimes to tell me when to shift when i have the stereo loud and can't hear the engine(because who uses tachs? it requires looking down!)... i guess it could be a little annoying... but a little trouble shoot... has it had a clutch job done?? in all cases i have heard it happened after a clutch job... bajavwnsoobnut
sounds to me like the struts, exaust hangers, or some of the bushings are going bad on it how many miles does it have?
Zefy
Mine has 140000km... so ummmmmm... like 90000 miles... but it has been doing it for quite a while... and only when the car is under load... when accelerating past 4000rpm... bajavwnsoobnut
well it could be tranny and motor mounts or the rear diff mounts going bad but also with that much mileage might listen to it over bumps and if it makes that noise might just be time for new struts cause my friends 02 leg had bad struts at 80k miles
agarnet
Thanks for the replies guys. I took the car to a Subaru dealer and the mecanic diagnosed it right away. The sound was from the muffler, and it's nothing to worry about. He said it's a very common problem. If the muffler is replaced, the sound will go away, but may come back later on if a stock muffler is used. PS I bought the car
