The new CrossTrek

I like it (just like every other Subie), however, I wish Subaru would expand their horizons a bit.  Currently, if you walk onto the Subaru dealer lot your got the Outback, Forester, Crosstrek...for the most part.  How many wagons do we need?  What are the differences?  Same concept, just a little different in size, price, fuel economy...  Personally, I think instead of coming out with the crosstrek, they should have came out with a pickup, small and full size.  Nothing huge, just a half ton...with the traditional boxer motor and AWD.  Subaru offers it all, safety, price, towing, versatility, options, reliability, etc.  What are we missing?  The truck bed option, for our blue collar workers and truck enthusiasts.

The XV is just a trim level for the Impreza platform. But I agree, Subaru needs to diversify a bit more. The BRZ is a great addition, they need a small truck now (not one with a 3 foot bed).

Would be nice to see them break into the full size car market. A big comfortable cruiser with the H6, or an H8! :D

Where is the LOYALE in that commercial??!??  They had the little "cheap and ugly" car, but not my beloved Loyale.

i counted at least 2 ea82 body cars in the first 20 seconds of the comercial.

as a matter of fact the 360 passes one to get in the car wash as well, you can see it in the background when its pulling on the ramps

For those that think the XV is simply a 4th generation Impreza hatch, it does share the same unibody (same chassis designation as a 4th generation Impreza hatch), BUT there are differences!

Subaru XV differences from Subaru Impreza hatch

Differences between Impreza hatch and XV Crosstrek, the XV Crosstrek has:
* Increased ground clearance due to suspension changes (8.7 inches versus 5.7 for regular Impreza, 5.9 for Impreza Sport), also results in improved approach, departure, and breakover angles for off-road use.
* Larger wheels and tires (17 x 7.0 inch wheels for XV, Sport/Limited Impreza hatch use same-size, lower trim levels use smaller; 225/55R17 tires XV, 205/50R17 tires Sport/Limited Impreza hatch), results in improved overall ground clearance and ability to drive over obstacles.
* Shorter wheelbase (103.7 inches versus 104.1 for regular Impreza), results in improved breakover angle compared to simply lifting suspension (and possibly due to packaging concerns).
* Revised gear ratios (manual transmission final drive ratio is 4.444 versus 4.111 for regular Impreza, other ratios have been modified as well for the XV's manual transmission; Lineartronic CVT gets lower final drive ratio as well), to compensate for extra weight, and for heavy-duty uses such as towing.
* Plastic body cladding protects paint throughout various portions of the body for off-road use.
* Length, width, and height have all grown (175.2 inches for XV, 173.8 inches for hatch; 70.1 for XV, 68.5 for hatch; 63.6 inches for XV, 57.7 inches for hatch)
* Increased weight (XV is roughly 200 lbs heavier than regular Impreza counterpart)
* Larger fuel-tank (15.9 gallons for XV, 14.5 gallons for regular Impreza), likely done for increased weight and for the possibility of heavy-duty use (or should I say heavier use such as towing).
* Larger front brakes (XV F/R 11.6/10.8 inches, regular Impreza F/R 10.9/10.8 inches), possibly WRX 2-pot front brake calipers, likely done for increased weight and for the possibility of heavy-duty use (or should I say heavier use such as towing).
* Marginally-less cargo space with seats up (22.3 cf XV, 22.4 cf Impreza hatch)
* Slightly-larger cargo space with seats down (51.9 cf XV, 49.7 cf Impreza hatch)
* Darker window tint in XV, results in improved privacy for changing clothes, especially useful for outdoor adventurers.
* Upgraded cooling system (uses 2007MY Subaru Forester radiator as confirmed on NASIOC)
* Unconfirmed, but although on the same chassis designation, supposedly the XV has extra welds in the unibody for reinforcement (unibody reinforced in XV over regular Impreza hatch)

I wager it has a larger tank because the diff is fartther underneath it and the bottom is flatter. all of out old subarus always had 15.9 gal tanks.

My BRAT has a 14.5 gal tank and the Loyales I know of have 14.5 gal tanks too, or were you referring to the older EJ's?

Also, I like it, but I still dislike the lack of diesel or a dual range here for the US.

I'm wondering if this will make it easier to lift the newer Imps. If they keep the same basic suspension design and just up the ride height and maybe tweak the body points, such as with the first Gen OBW and Lego, this may make the new Subarus a viable offroad alternative again.

My 87 GL Coupe has a 15.9 Gallon tank.  That's what the manual says anyway.  If it's 14.5, I think I have a problem, 'cause I've filled it to 15.3 without topping it off, so I don't know where it would hide the extra gallon.  On that note, those cars are great at using most of the tanks.

Also, I would really like to see that dual range here, too.  In fact, that was the first thing I thought of when I heard about it.

Ah, well, looks like I remembered wrong. Thank you.

And I know my BRAT had a 14.5, because that's almost exactly how much it took to fill it up after I ran out on my way to the gas station :P

I can confirm this. The xv has towing capacity where as the impreza does not, and this is due to unibody reinforcement. In Canada the XV is rated to tow 480KG. You guys can do your imperial conversions. B)

Our 2.0 3rd-gen 5-speed SR Impreza is rated to tow 650kg unbraked and 1200kg braked... In New Zealand. I've had up to a ton on it unbraked, although the clutch did not like the hill start, and it was gutless to the extreme... DR would have been nice there. But the moral of the story is, don't tow a rally car (KP60 Starlet)+trailer with a 2.0 Impreza.

Also, in relation to Loyale 2.7's DR XV post, that's the 3rd-gen XV, not the latest 4th-gen based variant. We got it with DR in NZ too, but the 4th-gen is 6-speed or CVT only. Pity, as the previous XV had terrible clearance, but now we get one with good clearance and no DR... Can't win. :P

When I talked to the subaru reps at the NY Auto Show (they actually send factory people from the headquarters) it does have some differences in the floorpan from the std imprezza.

That clip on the rollers was pretty impressive.  It would be interesting to see what a Loyale could do on that course...

The part on the cock-eyed ramps would be tough.

Hold your fire 2013 Crosstek owners!  But I have to ask if the 2014 models, other than the hybrid, are going to offer a choice of rims and some better colour options.

Both my wife and I are considering buying new Crossteks (for different reasons) but I can't abide the hideous rims offered on the 2013s and the colour choices are downright sad.  I can't see anything about the non-hybrid 2014s, although maybe it's significant that the hybrid does show nicer rims and a different colour.  Anybody seen any changes coming for 2014?

My 03 Forester has been a superb vehicle, hence our plans to buy again, but we don't need the SUV size any more, although the easy ingress/egress of the raised platform is welcome.
