The story of my DD brat...

first part documented here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/125445-time-for-upgrades-to-the-brat/?hl=%2Btime+%2Bupgrades

the abriged version....

had a brat, drove the crap out of it, did a heap of upgrades, blew up the engine....

that was last summer.

lack of time and money meant it has sat that way till now,

i had a good core hydro lifter engine so am in the process of rebuilding that to get the brat back on the road

i will keep updating as it goes,

i am driving a cargo van at the moment so hopefully it goes pretty quick.....

got the engine dismantled,

needs bearings as well, got them ordered.

had to get the mains from rockauto - my local federated couldn't get them

hopefully going back together this weekend......

also working on getting the interior put back together - installing "new" stereo....

Good luck with the rebuild.  Is that your old Ford in the background?  My daily for when the GL decides it's not happy is a '65 F100.

yea its a '64 F250 with a y-block, coolest truck ever - but its a b##ch to drive no power anything, its task is to hold a sign outside our fruit stand all summer.

another week goes by......

starting to reaasemble now, at least thats a start

You have a great body to work with. Keep up the good work. I have to redo some gaskets on my Brat at some point this summer.

thanks i work out......

sorry had to comment on that one

back to reality

got the block back together, crank and rods in

also got old engine ready to lift out

and got the stereo installed.....very important

anyone have a brilliant idea for freeing up piston rings

they are all good and not worn but gummed up and stuck in the grooves

2nd comp ring is the worst and i know they are fragile

have had them soaking in gasoline fo a few days.....no dice

hopefully back on the road this weekend

finnally got the rings to unstick....

soaked in berryman chemdip, got most of them

1 compression ring still stuck, boiled it on the BBQ for an hour or so in washing detergent,

and a lot of swearing and poking got it to move...

so pistons are all back in, old engine is out of the car,

i am so ready to drive this thing again....

you don't realize how addictive they are.

got the engine in, but....

there was a freeze plug missing out of the head.....

every one i talked to said they wouldn't have checked that either

ahh well i get to install it with the engine in the car, that should make it more interesting

should be able to fill it with oil AND coolant AND have the fluids stay where they are supposed to be

the Subaru dealer had to "find" 20mm freeze plugs in a bin of assorted ones

no-one else had them......

on the road this weekend...!!!!

don't know if i did something wrong or if there was something wrong with the engine that i didn't check.....

ahh well either way ......

bought another RUNNING engine and am having a subaru master tech install it for me,

should be back on the road in the next couple weeks

been driving the hell out of this thing - ready for winter

got new tyres for the front - now i have the same size all round, 196/75 R14

found another set of rims for $40, so i can keep my wide ones

dont look as mean as the 245/60 that were on the back - but at least i can run in 4wd
