ea81 engine with ea82 5sp tranny

In the old USRM, there are two links for the swap from an ea81 4sp. tranny to an ea82 5sp.  One says to use the EA81 flywheel and pressure plate with the EA82 clutch disk, and the other says to use the ea82 flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate.    So my question is which is correct?  The first one doesn't say anything about mods, and the second requires transferring timing marks and grinding the bell housing.  Thanks for any help.

I have found that there are 2 different thicknesses for the EA81 flywheels: one is the same as the EA82 flywheels, and works fine when using the EA82 clutch disc. The other is almost 1/4" thicker than the EA82 flywheel, and when the clutch disc is installed the pressure plate is backed up so far into the throwout bearing that it doesn't clamp the disc and slips like mad. I have run into this problem twice.

I always swap the EA82 flywheel, it's just not a lot of extra work and it assures you avoid the above mentioned issue. It also allows you to use XT-6 clutch parts if you want more grab.

Alright.  I dropped the EA82 out today, and I noticed it has six wires running from three plugs on the tranny.  The EA81 only has four wires from two different plugs.  My question is what are the other two wires with the extra plug.  I can only think of back up lights and 4WD indicator.

On a side note, the old USRM said to use the EA82 console and boots, but I am going to try and swap the 4WD linkage allowing me to hopefully use the EA81 console and boots.  Any info on success with that?

Yes use the EA81 console, boots but the linkage has to be modified with a 5-speed transmission modified tranny support.

Bratsrus1  (Jerry) makes these kits.  They work great and makes the interior looks stock... contact him.  It's not that costly and he has a quick turn around time.

That tranny mod. is great.. you will love the way it drives after.

Anybody? The EA82 has 3 plugs and theEA81 only has two. Do I need the third/which two should I plug in?

Nuetral switch for EFI cars.  You can ignore.  this will be the switch on the trans furthest back on the drives side.  Not the one at the back, that is the 4wd.

The forward one on the drivers side, a bit lower, is the Reverse lights.  Green wires i believe for reverse lights.

IIRC, the 4wd indicator is on the linkage in EA81, in the trans on EA82.

So....If you wire up the 4wd lights on your trans, to the connector on the car, you will get a "LO" light in 4wd, and the "4wd" won't light til your in low range.

That's how mine is and it's fine as long as you know what that "lo" is 4wd, and "4wd" is low.

I just did what most do... I ordered Jerry's Tranny kit.  Just bolts in.  I painted mine a bright red... marks are for my notes... just in case he goes away... I can always make one.  He's cheap, he's quick and his kits aren't that bad either!

  • 1 month later...

Here you go...

From what I understand of the EA81's 4wd light switching system, the light to indicate you're in 4wd is located on the base of the 4wd lever, the low range is found at the gearbox.  To wire in your EA82 5spd box use the above 4wd marked wires from the low range switch on the gearbox.  To wire in the 4wd light you'll need to run two wires from the gearbox switch into the cab to the wiring at the base of the 4wd lever.

Once you've done this you'll have your proper 4wd light and low range light working properly ;)

Cheers
