I am the original owner of a 1999 Legacy Outback (125k on the clock) with the TZ1A2ZJEBA (4EAT) transmission. Just started throwing code 79 - Duty Solenoid C. I've been to 2 dealers, both quoted ~$2500, and three or four independents - only one who would even talk about it and also quoted around $2500.
I've read write ups on the repair and it seems relatively simple, but I've also tried to repair a riding mower MT - and it's never moved since. So, I'd prefer to pay someone a reasonable fee to repair. Does anyone know a Dallas area (live in Plano, work in downtown) Subaru shop they recommend? (Dealers were Dallas Subaru and Plano Subaru.) The independents seem to walk out with their Snap-On diagnostics reader, not see any fault codes, and announce they can't work on it or they will just have to overhaul the whole transmission.
Second option - if I pull the transmission and do most of the grunt work - would anyone in Dallas be interested in lending insight once it's out on what to repair/replace, and help me get it back in? That's the part I'm mostly afraid of, that I'll have the thing in parts and not be able to get it back in. (Transmissions scare me!)
Also, I've been looking quite a while but only found two write-ups on this. If anyone has a good idea, I'd love to see the link.
