I am the original owner of a 1999 Legacy Outback (125k on the clock) with the TZ1A2ZJEBA (4EAT) transmission.  Just started throwing code 79 - Duty Solenoid C.  I've been to 2 dealers, both quoted ~$2500, and three or four independents - only one who would even talk about it and also quoted around $2500.

I've read write ups on the repair and it seems relatively simple, but I've also tried to repair a riding mower MT - and it's never moved since.  So, I'd prefer to pay someone a reasonable fee to repair.  Does anyone know a Dallas area (live in Plano, work in downtown) Subaru shop they recommend?  (Dealers were Dallas Subaru and Plano Subaru.)  The independents seem to walk out with their Snap-On diagnostics reader, not see any fault codes, and announce they can't work on it or they will just have to overhaul the whole transmission.

Second option - if I pull the transmission and do most of the grunt work - would anyone in Dallas be interested in lending insight once it's out on what to repair/replace, and help me get it back in?  That's the part I'm mostly afraid of, that I'll have the thing in parts and not be able to get it back in.  (Transmissions scare me!)

Also, I've been looking quite a while but only found two write-ups on this.  If anyone has a good idea, I'd love to see the link.

Thanks,

Jeff

I can't recommend a shop, but...

Duty C replacement is possible with the trans still in the car. That's done fairly often. No need to remove the whole thing because just the tail section needs to come off. I think it's 8 or 10 bolts and a couple of alignment dowels.

It's not all that bad of a job. I know there is a writeup or two on this site about it but the search feature here isn't as smart as Google. There should also be some info on Subaruoutback.org. They used practically the same transmission from 1990 to 2009. As long as the writeup you find is for a 4EAT the info is relavent.

i think you posted somewhere else, this sounds familiar?

Subaru dealer in Atlanta charged $250 last year to do my friends - he already had the part so that was labor only.  They're over $2,000 high, thievery.

You simply need to replace the solenoid.

*** As fairtax just said the trans does not need to be removed to do it, it only takes a couple hours.

i suppose austin, TX is too far but cardoc is a well respected subaruoutback.org forum member and works at or owns a shop there.

I think I might have you sent a PM grossgary.  I paid a shop this morning $70 to disconnect the read axle on your advice by the way.  Hopefully with the FWD fuse, that will get me through until I get this sorted out.

Thanks for the replies.  I'm off to look up cardoc on the other forum!
