arod812
Once in a while my speedometer won't work for a minute when I start to drive from start up. Well when its not working it won't shift and if I start to get going and then it kicks on the car will rev way up. Anyone else ever had this issue? 98 Subaru Legacy Limited
Legacy777
Do you know if your car still uses a cable to drive the speedometer or if it uses a speed sensor? You should be able to look in the engine bay and see if there is a cable coming from the trans up through the firewall.
Gloyale
98 is electronic. Most likely the speed sensor that screws into the trans is bad. I replace a few every year.

arod812
What type of cost am I looking at if that is the problem?
johnceggleston
speed sensors are cheap, check out www.car-part.com but you might want to check the screws on the back side of the speedo, instrument cluster, first. if they are loose, the speedo will not be grounded which will cause it to fail. and loose screws could cause an intermittent problem . arod812
I'm clueless when it comes to car repair as I've asked a few times if there were any members here locally near me
