Guest taprackready Posted April 25, 2004 Share Posted April 25, 2004 My 17 year old daughter totaled her 94 Justy by turning left without looking and a lifted chevy 4x4 coming from the other direction slammed into the passenger side. Luckily none of her sisters were in the car. My daughter was able to unbuckle and step out on her own power. Stitches to her right knee and abrasions are all she got. Brake, gas and clutch peddle are up where your knees are supposed to be. Passenger side of the car has no "room to live". I thank Heavenly Father she's alive and walking. I think I'll have her drive the Suburban from now on. Hopefully she's learned a lesson about looking two or three times before you turn. Meeky Moose Posted April 25, 2004 Share Posted April 25, 2004 glad, shes alright.. minor wounds give her something to think about next time she turns without looking.. definitely make her drive the suburban. if my wife would have been in a soob, or any small car for that matter, instead of our gmc conversion van, her and my daughter would have been dead.. she basically turned left without looking, running a red light, and got nailed by a nissan 200sx doing 65mph.. the van was totalled, but her and my baby girl came through it without a scratch.. sometimes i think maybe "the man" upstairs made us go through all those problems with that van, so my family could still be alive today.. who knows huh.. too b ad about the justy, but its just a car and can be replaced.. Alexx Posted April 25, 2004 Share Posted April 25, 2004 I don't think the discussion of driving the Suburban instead of the Justy is the only issue here. Why put someone in a bigger car who may now injure someone else if they aren't more careful? I say another Justy and no cell phone while driving is much safer to all concerned than driving a suburban and using a cell phone. I know you said nothing about cell phones so maybe she didn't have one nor was using one, but this issue must be raised for all new drivers. No one under the age of 21 should be driving and cell phoning unless it's an emergency situation. Making a left hand turn is one of the most dangerous manuevers one can make. Not only must one look for oncoming traffic, but one must also look to see if anyone is in the crosswalk AND make sure all the cars are stopped caddy corner to you. I would ask your daughter to describe exactly what happened and have her identify what she did wrong, and then mention the other things she may have overlooked. bushbasher Posted April 25, 2004 Share Posted April 25, 2004 I see what Alexx is saying, and I kind of agree, that putting her in a big invincible suburban may cause her to think even less about her driving, because she wont fear getting hit so much, and she wont learn to be a safer driver. On the other hand, justys are little runts on the road, not very safe with all these big cars and suvs out there. A justy might make her more careful out of fear, but if she does get in another accident its more likely she'll be injured. I would put her in a medium sized car with an airbag. Meeky Moose Posted April 26, 2004 Share Posted April 26, 2004 I know it sounds logical that by putting her in the suburban that she might not be as careful thus injuring someone else.. tell ya what, my wife totalled our van, if her and my baby woulda been in anything smaller they both would have been dead, period. i am thankful she was in that big van.. after that she was alot more cautious driving and paying attention to what she was doing. then i let her drive my acura, she put it in a ditch and totalled it too.. she acctually got hurt in this one. point being, sure a big vehicle can hurt others if you plow into a justy. but if she pulls into traffic again and a big 4x4 plows into her, she will more than likely be around because the suburban is so big.. i know i would rather have my wife drivin something big than small anyday, just for the matter, that if they did get in a wreck i know they'd be comin home..
