1989 SPFI EA82 Code 55

Recommended Posts

My car is throwing code 55 EGR temperature sensor or circuit. I have checked and my egr is not stuck, and seems to be actuating under vacuum. I cleared the code and it came back. Searched and someone else said they replaced their ecu and that fixed the problem. Not sure about that, but that does not seem like a solution for me. Also this car was purchased new from Tennessee.

The EGR code is caused by a problem in circuit/wiring of the EGR's vacuum solenoid.  This is a common problem, and the usual cause is a bad solenoid.  This solenoid is a little plastic box with 2 vacuum lines attached, and a pair of wires running to it.  The solenoid coil tends to fail.

Replace with another solenoid, or you can also replace the solenoid with a resistor of a specific resistance

Guys....it's the EGR temp circuit code, not the solenoid code.

The EGR temp circuit code would only be on cali spec models.  You need to check the manifold and see if there is a sensor there right at the base of the EGR.

If not, then that will explain the code.  Either manifold swapped into a Cali car, or more likely a Cali ECU swapped into the Tennessee car.

Just to be clear, it's actually lighting the CEL solid with a real code?  You aren't interpruting the model code flash of steady 5-5-5-5........which IIRC would be a manual, 49 state SPFI car.
